Story
Professor Nikidik aka DOC is an 8 yr old, 5 lb Affenpinscher Mix.  He came to us with an eye injury that caused glaucoma to form.  As he is blind in this eye, the best course of action is to remove it because otherwise he would need drops 4 x's a day for life to keep it from becoming painful.  Since he cannot see out of it, that seems absurd and removing it is the best option.  Update: Nikidik had the necessary surgery to remove his bad eye. He was neutered and had a dental as well, loosing most of his teeth. Recovery went smoothly and Nikidik is back to his normal crazy self.  A few things about Nikidik from his foster home:  As with his breed, he is confident and spicy!  When he loves you he LOOOVVVEESSS you but he can be choosy about who is an instant friend.  Sometimes he requires bribes in the form of treats.  He does not like being grabbed, so we do not recommend him for homes with small children.  Our best estimate is that he would do best with kids 12+ but all kids are different and we are open to discussion.   Housebroken is not a title he can claim 100%…yet, but he is working very hard at pleasing his foster family. . He wears a belly band 100% of  his indoor time otherwise you may find surprise “puddles” if you miss his cues to go outside.  We believe in his former home, he was using pee pads because he hated going on the grass initially. He is much better at walking on the grass now. He has no problem pooping outside if the timing is right but if we take our eye off him for a minute between him being ready and getting that leash on him, well we will find his business in another area. At least he is consistent and we know where to look. We admittedly initially gave him too much freedom to roam around. We are back on supervised house exploration.  We have tried kennel training him but he HATES it. After multiple attempts, each resulting in 4 hours of whining and barking, we gave in and stopped putting him in. His favorites place to hang out is on the top of the couch where he can keep his eye on everything.  He is  very food motivated and we are working on not begging or barking while we are eating and he is making excellent progress. He is a cuddler on his terms. He is definitely a little shadow to his chosen person. On occasion,  he can be vocal with a protective little growl when someone unexpectedly gets too close to his person, but he has never bitten anyone. He tolerates other dogs but doesn’t really play with them. He will protest if they get too close and go find a place where he is left alone. With limited vision Doc gets startled easily and he will react in a defensive way.   We are seeing a little more of his personality each day. He wants affection and is spending more and more time on our laps where he enjoys being scratched and  getting belly rubs. We have found that he is happiest when the world is quiet, steady and predictable. He will need someone that has time, patience and a calm approach before he feels safe with new humans. Once he can trust you, he can be sweet and gentle his way   Doc would do best in a home where someone is home a lot. He is definitely a constant companion type of dog and craves being in the presence of someone at all times. If you have some experience with shy dogs and the patience to help Doc feel safe and loved, he will be worth the wait.      GENERAL INFO:   Housebroken?: yes Crate Trained?: NO Leash Trained?: Yes Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: No but low shed Good with cats?: No idea Good with dogs?: Yes Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 12 Umbrella of Hope is an all-volunteer, donation-run, non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals from local shelters, places them in private foster homes, provides them with needed medical care and then finds them new homes.  Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. Adoption fee: $650 Meet Netflix: Your Loyal, Quirky Little Sidekick   Netflix is a 10 month old Brussels Griffon/Affenpinscher mix weighing 18 lbs with a big personality packed into a small, scruffy body. He was surrendered to our rescue when his owner could no longer care for him. Equal parts hilarious, affectionate, and spirited, he’s the kind of dog who will keep you laughing, keep you company, and keep you on your toes— in the best way.   A Day in the Life   Netflix starts his weekdays on a relaxed note. While his person is up at 6 am, he prefers to linger in bed a bit longer before easing into his day. Breakfast is served around 7:00–7:15 am, followed by a morning walk between 7:30–7:45.   During the workday, Netflix does great at home on his own. After a brief transition period in the kitchen, he now enjoys full access to the apartment— and aside from one balcony mishap early on, he’s proven himself to be reliably housetrained.   Afternoons are his time to shine. When his person gets home (usually between 4:30–5:30), they head out for a longer walk, often with a stop at the park. Afterward, it’s dinner, followed by playtime— his favorite part of the day. Rope toys, squeaky toys, tug-of-war… Netflix is all in. He wraps up his evening with a short nighttime walk before settling in close for the night.   Personality: Equal Parts Snuggler and Comedian   Netflix made quite the first impression— on day one, he refused food but enthusiastically stood on his back legs to peer out every window on the way up to the apartment. That curious, expressive nature is still very much part of who he is.   At home, he is deeply affectionate and thrives on connection. He’s the ultimate cuddle buddy, always wanting to be close— often with a paw resting on you, just to make sure you’re still there. At night, he’s happiest curled up right beside you. If you’ve been searching for a “little spoon,” Netflix is ready to apply for the job.   He can be a bit of a velcro dog, happily following you around and even joining your workouts (sometimes directly underneath you). He loves attention and will absolutely try to climb into your lap whenever the opportunity presents itself—boundaries are a work in progress.   Outside World: A Work in Progress   Netflix is still building confidence outside the home. New people and busy environments can make him anxious, and he may bark when passing others on walks or hearing noises near the apartment door. His foster has been proactively managing this by creating space and helping him feel more secure.   He’s also learning leash manners. While he does pull and has shown interest in chasing birds and squirrels, he’s already making progress with consistent guidance and redirection.   Play Style & Energy   Netflix is not a couch potato. Netflix has energy to burn and absolutely loves to play. He’s especially fond of squeaky toys (so much so that they get put away at night to avoid late-night concerts) and will happily entertain himself— or you— for hours.   Training & Habits   Netflix is housetrained and has free roam of the home. He’s not crate-trained but has done well with structure and routine. Like many young dogs, he can get a bit mischievous when bored— he’s been known to chew through a harness and even a seatbelt— so keeping him mentally and physically engaged is key.   He enjoys a variety of foods and treats, including chicken, eggs, yogurt, blueberries, and sweet potato-wrapped goodies. Mealtime is always a highlight.   Ideal Home   He would do best with someone who understands that he’s still learning about the world and is committed to continuing his training with patience and consistency. In return, you’ll get a deeply loyal, loving companion who just wants to be your person.   Netflix previously lived with another dog but is currently the only pet in the home. He's okay with either!   Why Netflix?   Because he’s the full package: funny, affectionate, playful, and full of personality. He may need a little guidance as he builds confidence, but he’s already shown how much love he has to give. With the right person, Netflix is going to absolutely shine.   And if you’re wondering— yes, by the end of the day, every single toy will somehow make its way back onto the floor. That’s just part of his charm.May 12, 2026, 5:47 pm
