My name is Grayson, and I am an American Bully with a heart that’s way bigger than my blocky head. I live at the shelter right now. It’s not so bad. The people here are kind, and they tell me I’m a “very good boy” at least seventeen times a day (I count). I know my family is out there. When volunteers come to visit, I show them my very best manners. I sit. I give gentle kisses. And then, when they sit down on the floor, I do the thing I am most famous for. I snuggle. Not just a little lean. Not a polite cuddle. No, no. I am a full-body, wrap-my-neck-around-you, melt-into-your-lap kind of snuggler. I tuck my big head under chins. I press my cheek against hearts. I sigh the deepest, happiest sigh. In those moments, the whole noisy world disappears. It’s just me and my person and the steady rhythm of love. The people here laugh and say, “Grayson thinks he’s a lap dog!” But I don’t think. I know. I know that one day, someone will walk past my kennel and stop. They’ll see my wiggly body and my hopeful eyes. They’ll sit down, and I’ll do what I do best. I’ll snuggle like I’ve been saving it just for them. Because I have. And when that day comes, I won’t just be leaving the shelter. I’ll be going home.
