Story
For Adoption: Zila! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/. Zila is the kind of dog who makes you believe in second chances. After spending the first 6-years of her life in a commercial breeding operation, she's learning what it means to be part of a family—and she’s absolutely blossoming. Zila is 18lbs and is on abit of a weight reduction plan as she was chubby when we got her. With her stunning red merle coat and one blue and one brown eye, Zila turns heads wherever she goes. But it’s her heart—not her looks—that makes her truly special. She’s incredibly loving, gentle, and absolutely adores people. Whether you're a toddler or a teen, a dog or a cat (she’s indifferent to feline friends), Zila welcomes everyone into her circle. If it exists, she probably loves it. She would be great with a family of kids 7 years or older. Her signature feature? That fluffy little tail that spins faster the closer you get—it’s her personal “proximity alarm” of joy! Zila is affectionate, friendly, and still a bit cautious as she adjusts to home life, but her desire to be close and loved shines through. She loves to snuggle and is happy to jump up on the couch for cuddles (and maybe a nap). She’s especially happy when there’s another dog in the home to help guide her—she learns quickly by following their lead. Zila is a dream in the car—calm, content, and comfortable whether she’s in a kennel or not. She’s kennel-trained, too, and sees it as a safe place rather than a punishment, often choosing it for an undisturbed nap. She will happily stay in her kennel for many hours and rarely makes a sound. Coming out with a wagging tale and happy snuggles. Zila’s foster family had two dogs that liked to bark at everything and, although she’d happily ran along with them to investigate, Zila rarely added to the chorus. If you are looking for a companion in a condo or apartment, Zila might be your girl. Keep in mind, Zila is a curious dog who is always interested in what's on the other side of the door, so be mindful of leaving doors to the outside or shared spaces open. She is fully house-trained but doesn’t always give clear signals when she needs to go out. With a consistent routine and possibly another dog to follow, she does beautifully. She’d thrive in a home that understands her quiet signals and can offer a bit of patience while she continues to gain confidence. Zila is a creature of habit and will learn the expected elimination schedule. She will relieve herself in the yard or on a walk (when it’s long enough). Zila has overcome a lot physically. She had seven teeth removed and is missing a few toes on her back left foot. That same leg also has a luxating patella, which doesn’t slow her down much—she still jumps up on the couch like a champ and prefers to lead the pack when walking, or running around with joy in the yard! Zila loves any opportunity to be outside and will happily walk on a leash anytime of the day, but prefers early evening. Her resilience is inspiring, and she continues to adapt with grace. Zila is great with kids, loves other dogs (and would do well with a confident canine companion). She is indifferent to cats. She does have prey drive toward small critters like rabbits and squirrels. Zila is learning to trust humans and is starting to take small treats after they are placed on the floor. She is learning the boundaries of play, food, and affection when with other dogs and is figuring out how to communicate her needs with the humans in her world. She will be an ever present shadow to her favourite people while she gains her confidence to explore the big world around her.
