Story
It was “last call” for Baxter at the shelter. Volunteers were told to come up and say their goodbyes after a cancerous tumor was found on his front leg. They said “it’s aggressive.” They said “it’s inoperable.” They said “it’s a risk.” But we decided to rescue Baxter anyway with hours to spare, and raise the money to give him his life saving amputation. And now, while Baxter may be without a leg, he’s been declared cancer free. Now they say “no evidence of metastasis.” They say “lymph nodes are clear. He’s gone from death’s door, to ADOPTABLE. What can we say about adoptable Baxter? Well, clearly he could win any beauty pageant, down one leg and all, but he would also win Mister Personality because Baxter’s is BIG. He tends to be pretty dramatic and he’s smart enough to know when to milk it. He’ll go from wrestling with his foster sister, to over-the-top sighs and wines when he notices a foster parent watching. He likes to put on a show and prefers a captive audience— in fact, he prefers to have people nearby 24/7. Your seat is actually “our seat” to Baxter. Your bathroom break is now quality time. You have some free time? No, no, it’s “WE time.” We like to giggle about it but we know that Baxter’s backstory isn’t a happy one. He was abandoned and ended up in the shelter spending 23 plus hours a day locked in a kennel alone. Even once rescued, he was in a lot of pain for a long time, and having someone near was his only comfort. Hopefully one day soon, Baxter will forget the physical pain of the cancer and the emotional pain of abandonment, and he won’t be quite as clingy as he is now. Maybe one day. And isn’t it a blessing that now we can say “one day?” Those days are no longer numbered. His life is full of possibility. He now can have a family, fulfillment, and finally, a FUTURE.

Story
I got hunter in Florida. I fell in love with him before I even got to meet him. He is a good boy. He was taken to the shelter because his original owner had a medical emergency. He would not let the paramedics in so the police tazzed him. He spent almost 2yrs locked up until I found him. He loves to play and is full of energy. He can be overwhelmed by too much commotion. He is good with older children who understand dogs. He will sit and stay. He is 3yrs old and has spent most of his life behind bars. He doesn't like cages at all. The only reason I'm looking for a new home is because I have moved back to Michigan and I have young grandchildren and my husband's son living with us and it's to much for him. I love Hunter with all my heart and just want him happy and not stressed. I have been back with my husband for two months and I have tried. It's just been to much for hunter even though he takes it all in stride.

Story
Meet Sancho! This resilient nine-month-old terrier mix has overcome a very rough start in life and deserves only the best of things to come! Abandoned at a gas station when he was only a few months old, Sancho was picked up by a good Samaritan, who ended up being his saving grace. Not only did she rescue him, we sadly found out he had parvo and she nursed him back to health! Here we are a few months later and Sancho is healthy, happy 50-pound bundle of fun! He's living with his amazing foster mom while he waits patiently for his forever family. This inspirational pup has a fond appreciation for life and will make some lucky family very happy for years to come! Sancho currently lives with two other fur siblings and plays very well with them! If you're looking for an energetic pal for your family fur baby, we'd be happy to set up a meet and greet! Sancho also lives with cats and knows when his feline friends need their space. Sancho is both house-trained and crate-trained! As Sancho is still a young man, he will benefit from continued training. He'll thrive in a home where he can be exercised on a daily basis and have a blast while doing it! This fun-loving guy hasn't met a toy he doesn't like! You name it-chew toys, balls and squeaky toys, he loves them all! Sancho has good recall and is currently learning new commands. He's a very capable pup and we know he'll make you proud. For his safety, we feel a fenced-in yard would be ideal for him to have his zoomies till his heart is content. After a living it up with his furry friends, Sancho appreciates snuggling under the blankets with his family at night. He loves to be close and will share lots of kisses with you to show you just how much he appreciates you. He sleeps well through the night in his crate. Based on our evaluation, we fell Sancho would do well in an active home with adults or families with kids ages eight and up. We feel he has the capability to live with other animals as well. If you'd like the honor of making Sancho part of your family, visit greatlakesdogrescue.com today and fill out an application for this spectacular boy!

Story
Meet Beautrice the 6yr Pit Mix! Beautrice is a very good girl and can't wait to meet her forever family! She has the best house manners, is crate trained and she is always down to do whatever you want! She is such a sweet girl and she is so eager to please. She is the perfect mix of energetic and calm. She loves going for walks, chomping on our water hose, carrying her favorite stuffed toys around the house and taking naps on her doggy beds! We feel she would do great in almost any home. She would love a fenced backyard, but this is not required. She would also do fine with older children! Although Beautrice is almost the perfect dog in every sense, her one setback is she has proven to be quite dog selective. We have tested her with many doggy friends and unfortunately, she has only taken a liking to a few pups during her time here. Because of this dog aggression, she will require a home without any other dogs or cats. We have been working on this with her and she has made tremendous progress, although we still feel she would feel most comfortable (and it would be the safest) in a home without other animals. Does Beautrice sound like a good fit for your family? Reach out for an adoption application!
