Mousie came to us from our rescue partner in rural Alabama. Mousie showed up one night in the yard of a kind stranger. We have seen the original Facebook post where he was looking for her owner, and stated, "She is the sweetest dog on earth!" Sadly, no one came looking for Mousie, but a local rescue stepped in and made sure she received vaccines, got spayed, and so on.
Mousie was lucky enough to find a foster home down there with a wonderful woman named Brandi, who said that Mousie was one of the best dogs she had ever met. And, she meant this as a compliment, "the least-Heeler-like Heeler I have ever met!" By that she meant that Mousie is calm, docile, quiet, and adapts well to any environment!
The latter could not be more true, as this country Mousie is currently a city mouse! Since arriving to us, she has been living in a foster home in Chicago, in a second floor apartment, and has adapted exceptionally well!
When Mousie was first assessed by the rescue in Alabama, it was clear that she had an old injury that was affecting the way she walked-- she limps a bit on her left hind leg. X-rays revealed that she had an old injury that caused her left hip to become dislocated.
Mousie has likely been living with this for so long that it doesn't seem to cause her discomfort, but does cause a limp, and may become painful down the road as arthritis sets in.
In the rural south, many rescues cannot afford orthopedic surgeries. Mousie was scheduled for a leg amputation, which is the route many places go with when facing these situations.
When we heard about how sweet, fun loving, dog social, and gentle Mousie was from her foster in Alabama, we knew we had to make her a Heartland dog and make sure she gets the veterinary care she needs so she doesn't have to lose her leg! Mousie will need an FHO surgery in the next few months, which Heartland will cover. We do many of these surgeries a year, and the surgery and recovery is always smooth, with the dogs feeling so much happier almost immediately.
In the meantime, our city Mousie is in her foster home living her best life.
Her fosters have told us that in between decompressing, she has shown them how resilient dogs can be! They write, "She is incredibly sweet! A very good, attentive, and happy pup! She's also using the stairs pretty easily! She doesn't quite know she can go to the bathroom on a walk/leash yet, but she's going out back in our yard with no issue at all.
She loves hanging out on the porch, cuddling on the couch, and gnawing on an antler! She is an all-around easy dog, and easy to love."
Mousie is looking for a home where she can stay put, and in return she will give you the gift of her sweet, vibrant personality on the daily. If you want to be greeted by a 1000 watt smile just for walking in the door, inquire about Mousie today!
Mousie’s adoption fee is $300. She is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.
