Story
Ruby is soon to be "paw-roled" from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with two inmate trainers and enrolled in a 24/7 8-week training program designed to equip the dog with a nice foundation of training that will help them succeed in their new home. Each of these dogs will go home potty and crate trained with a whole list of cues and basic behaviors; to ensure a successful adoption, we are providing four training sessions to adopters, so you can learn what your dog knows, and an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. These dogs also go home with a biothane leash and collar, 6 months of heartworm prevention, are fully up-to-date on all vaccines and medication, and are spayed and neutered.Ruby was one of 25 we rescued from a recent hoarding case in Sandoval County. She is deaf due to double merle breeding. In the program she is learning a full curriculum of hand signals that cue all her basic behaviors. She loves being able to communicate with the people now! Ruby is sweet, and silly. Though the great big world out there is all new to her, and she sometimes proceeds with curious caution, she is a brave girl. With the right support she can overcome her obstacles. This cuddle bug beauty is ready to find her forever home.

Not good with kids, Not good with dogs, Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Dawn is looking for her new day. We welcomed this terrified, skinny, 15yo deaf Aussie with infected skin from the hoarding case in Sandoval County. After vetting, she was adopted quickly by a loving family, but she's having a hard time with her deaf dog sibling, and it's just not fair to either of them. Dawn is in the sunset of her days, after a lifetime of squalid conditions and severe neglect, struggling for enough resources to survive. She deserves a soft place of comfort and care, and we feel she would do best in a quiet home without other dogs or small children, where she can just be loved by her person.

Story
PLUTO is a curious semi-feral dog who likes other dogs. With humans, he'll sniff your hand through a fence, but if there's no fence, he keeps a short distance. He is a sweet dog. While he's getting to know you, he'll be fine in a secure yard with housing and hanging out with you. As you progress in your bond to each other he'll make his way into living in the house with you. He's a diamond in the rough, he's sweet. He needs a hero - a human that will commit to him and gain his confidence and bond with him. When he was a puppy, a human poisoned his fur brother and fur grandmother. He is wary of some humans because of this. He has many dog friends - Koda and Arby of two of his bff's. His adoption fee includes his neutering, vaccines, deworming, microchip. He was born on a reservation one and a half years ago. We are still Covid-cautious and have specific adoption and Covid rules listed below. Revised adoption policyDue to Covid -19 pandemic and social distancing requirements, we've revised our adoption policy. First, please email (desertpawsnm@gmail.com) to inquire before you fill out the online application to see if the pet is still available. (Please do not call or text). We'll send you a link to the application. We are unable to do multi-dog/cat meetgreets or adoption events at this time or bring multiple animals to your house to choose from, so please only inquire if you're serious about adopting this particular animal. If you're just shopping around with several shelters and rescues, please let us know this. If your application is approved (which 'could' take up to one week) then we will contact you to set up a Zoom chat or ph call to answer questions/clarify anything and set up a day/time to bring the pet to you. Since we can't come into the home due to Covid-19, we ask that you send us pics /video of your home/yard/living area/current pets. We will discuss with you about meeting your other pets. At the meeting/adoption at your house (outside) please wear a mask (as will we), keep to a properly distanced social distance and have hand sanitizer and your own leash. We adopt locally to Abq, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, White Rock and Rio Rancho areas. No out of area adoptions inquiries please. The animals are fostered and our foster families like to know their fosters are happy, healthy, and cared for during their lifetime. We appreciate staying in touch periodically (just a pic, holiday card, social media, pics/videos etc will make our work worthwhile :-)) Our volunteers and adoption board are working diligently with an overload of inquiries since Covid to match families and forever pets. Our workload on the reservations has also increased. We're sorry, but if you email us with questions that are already answered here or fill out an application that does not fit the parameters of our procedures we will not be replying to you. Thank you for your understanding on this! Thank you - we look forward to hearing from you and having another furbaby united with a furever family!April 21, 2024, 12:06 am

She loves to play - and when she's pooped, she passes out. She is very smart, and really thrives from the mental challenge, and sense of purpose the training in the program provides for her. With what looks to be a fair amount of border collie in her, she'll likely stay on the smaller side and will really blossom with someone who knows what working dogs love most (exercise, jobs, and stimulation). She'd likely be happy to find a home with another dog.
