Shelter FAQs

The City of Hopewell Animal Shelter is run by the Animal Control Officers. We fall under the Hopewell Police Department and train accordingly to serve the animals and the public of Hopewell. Our shelter is currently a small scale shelter with 28 dog kennels and 14 cat cages. Our shelter is often full. We work hard to find our animals that are not claimed by an owner a new home or an approved rescue. Most of our animals at our facility are animals that were found running loose that no one came to look for. We do often get animals in from owner surrenders where the previous owners can no longer care for them. At times we also seize animals and they will eventually need forever homes or rescue. Come on down to the City of Hopewell and meet the wonderful Animal Control Officers and the Shelter staff that care for the animals on a daily basis.
As Animal Control we serve the City of Hopewell
  • 1. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
  • 2. Meet the Pet
  • 3. Submit Application
  • 4. Meet the Pet
  • 5. Approve Application
  • 6. Sign Adoption Contract
  • 7. Take the Pet Home

Additional adoption info

Fill out an application to adopt. A small back ground is done to confirm that the adopters have not been convicted of animal neglect and/or domestic violence (there is a strong link between the two).

If approved, it's a $10.00 adoption fee for the city, plus the cost of the spay/neuter. The spay/neuter fee varies of the species, sex and weight.

Donations are always welcome at the shelter! Items that we are ALWAYS in need of are the following: Dog/Puppy Food Cat/Kitten Food (wet food also) Cat Litter** Bleach Liquid lysol Towels (hand towels/bath towels) Dog toys Cat toys Dawn dish soap Monetary Donations can be made to Hopewell Animal Hospital at 804-458-9521. Please tell them you would like to assist with Hopewell Animal Control Donations only.
