My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Rita!

At around 8 years young and a solid 70 pounds of personality, Rita is the perfect blend of mature and playful! Don’t let her age fool you—this girl’s got pep in her step and plenty of zest for life. Whether she’s trotting along on a leisurely stroll or curling up for a well-earned nap, Rita’s all about enjoying the little things.

Rita’s social with a splash of spunk—she’s shown potential with other dogs and might enjoy a furry sibling who’s just the right mix of playmate and couch buddy. Rita needs a home without small dogs or cats. If there are kids in her forever home, we recommend any human siblings be 10 years or older as we have not seen her with kids yet.

Looking for a low-key companion with a fun streak? Rita’s your gal. She’ll keep you smiling with her spunky spirit and loyal heart. If your idea of a good time includes relaxed walks and quality snuggle sessions, Rita just might be your perfect match.

Come meet this golden-hearted goofball and see why everyone here is smitten with Rita!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

All of our adoptable animals are up-to-date on all age appropriate vaccinations, spayed or neutered, de-wormed, de-flea and microchipped before adoptions are finalized. All dogs over six months of age receive a temperament assessment by our Certified Professional Dog Trainer to ensure appropriate placement. Also, many animals in our care receive basic obedience training to improve manners and increase adoptability.

We are currently doing adoptions by appointment only. Please contact us by phone at (234) 212-9843 or email at adoptions@summithumane.org, and an adoption counselor will return your message. They will review our adoption process, answer any questions, and tell you more about the animals currently available for adoption at our shelter and in our foster program. If we have a match for you and your family, an appointment will be scheduled to meet the animal.

Additional questions can be directed to our adoption team at (234) 212-9843.

More about this shelter

Since 1968, the Humane Society of Summit County (HSSC) has been the trusted caretaker and advocate for Summit County’s victims of animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment and stray animals suffering from illness and injury. We employ two full-time Humane Officers who respond to emergency calls, investigate animal cruelty, and, as warranted, prosecute offenders. We protect and care for our community’s abused, discarded, and forgotten animals. We strive every day to rehabilitate our rescued animals, find them great homes, and provide them with bright futures.
