My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rico is available through our `Adopt From a Foster Home` program. If you are interested in scheduling a meeting, please fill out the request form here: Adopt From Foster Form. Please do not make an appointment through our online booking calendar, as he is not available to meet on site.

Age: 3 years
Weight: 43.20 kg

A little bit about Rico:
- unknown history with kids, all interactions should be supervised
- no history with cats and small animals, all interactions should be supervised
- has had positive interactions with other calm, confident dogs

Rico may be a large boy, but this gentle giant is a lap dog at heart! This gorgeous guy was surrendered to us for no fault of his own and is waiting for his forever home in the comfort of a foster home. In the shelter he was quite shut down, overwhelmed by the unfamiliar sounds, spaces and people. But in his foster home he has truly blossomed - his foster describes him as “genuinely the sweetest dog,” and it doesn’t take long to see why!

Once he warms up (usually within a day), Rico bonds deeply and loves to stay close to his people. He can be a little shy at first, but he’s never shown any signs of aggression, and he settled beautifully even when staying with new people in a new home. He would thrive with someone who can offer companionship and plenty of cozy moments, as he’s happiest curled up nearby and nudging gently for more pets.

Rico has had nothing but positive interactions with other dogs and could enjoy a canine friend in his forever home. We would be happy to facilitate a dog introduction here at the shelter to ensure a good match! Rico, to our knowledge, has never been around cats before, so we would strongly recommend slow, supervised introductions. He also loves his walks, especially when there are squirrels to watch. He may pull at the start of an exciting adventure, but he quickly relaxes into a nice rhythm.

If your bed, home and heart are all feeling a little empty, Rico`s got more than enough love, fluff and, well, Rico, to fill those spaces! Fill out the Adopt from Foster form above if you think he may be just the pup you`ve been looking for.

More about this shelter

CONNECTING LIVES SINCE 1922

From our earliest beginning, Calgary Humane Society was more than a shelter. As Calgary’s first-established animal welfare organization, connecting the lives of animals and people while providing essential animal services to the community remains our central priority.

Today, Calgary Humane Society (CHS) shelters almost 5,000 homeless animals each year. In 1922 we set out to help as many animals as we can and we will continue to do so by fostering the values of respect, compassion, commitment, teamwork, integrity and innovation.

Our mission is to help as many animals as we can.

Our vision is using innovative strategies to lead, inspire, and educate in the humane treatment of companion animals, fostering an enlightened community that consistently demonstrates respect and compassion for all animals.

Our dream is a community where animals are valued, humanely treated, and live enriched lives.

Calgary Humane Society is committed to creating a better tomorrow through education and collaboration.
