My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kej (ACCT-A-238847) is a 5-year-old neutered male who was brought in by police on 12/7. He is in urgent need of an ophthalmology consultation and may ultimately require enucleation of his right eye.

Medical:
On 12/8 exam Doctor noted: "OD needs to be evaled, looks injured/painful. Medical records indicate issue has been ongoing for over a year. OS WNL, OD scleritis, conjunctivitis, corneal edema/neovascularization, hypopyon

Ears have erythema and waxy brown debris AU. MM pink, healthy dentition. Heart, lungs auscultate WNL. Murmur noted in previous medical history but not appreciated today. Neutered male in excellent body condition.

Assessment
Conjunctivitis and anterior uveitis OD - r/o previous trauma vs immune mediated vs infectious

Mild bilateral otitis externa”

On 12/7 intake staff noted: "Bright, alert, responsive. Age approxiamtely 2-3 years old. Right eye was very inflamed and red, left eye was also red but clear. Ears were waxy and nose was dry and crusty. Teeth are white with little to no staining.”

Behavior:
Per staff behavioral eval 12/13:
Kennel Presentation: Kej was splooted out with neutral body. He came forward and allowed easy leashing. he slowly walked out once secured

Leash Skills: does not pull, trots with a wagging tail when he sees dogs

Sociability: In the room I let Kej explore on his own before interacting with him. he slowly walked around, sniffing and snorting. he was in his own world but i peaked his interest once he heard a treat box. he trotted over and took some very gently. he is pretty much in his own world, liking to explore and do his own thing. he likes to lean against you while i rubbed her sides and hips.

Play: no interest

Dog Interaction: N/A

Return to Kennel: walked right back into kennel without an issue

Color Level: gold

Walksheet notes 12/9-12/12: Kej was walked on 12/9, 12/11, and 12/12. On 12/9, the handler noted that Kej was low energy, had no trouble with being leashed, and was good both on and off of the leash. On 12/11 and 12/12, the handler noted that Kej was low energy with no other issues, describing Kej's needs as "low and slow". During an eval on 12/13, Kej was noted to be a very sweet, slow moving dog who loves treats and rubs.

On 12/8 per previous owner: "I adopted Kej about a year ago. He had been living across the street from me in a garden apartment. I never saw him being walked. He was abandoned around Christmas. He had abysmal bathroom habits. He needs to relieve himself often. I take him out just before I go to sleep, to avoid accidents. I had a friend and her dog staying with me when Kej arrived. He would not get into the car. She hoisted him in, and we drove to the park. He loved the car, the park, and the other dogs. He ran and played nicely. Then the joyful play got too rough, and we became unpopular in the field.

I started to walk him on the many trails in the park. It worked for a while, but he started to play rough with me suddenly. It was scary. I was alone in the woods with him. Then he attacked me, “playfully,” while I was driving. This happened several times. He is fine walking on a leash in the neighborhood without the “playful” attacks, but for how long? I don’t understand the triggers for his aggressive play. He mostly pulls on my clothing, but he has bitten my arms, and left black and blue bruises. Kej is good in the house with cats. Outdoors he chases, but does not catch them. I think that Kej does miss contact with other dogs. He also needs to work off his energy. I love Kej, and I have given him the best year of his life. I am almost 78 years old, and I hate to give him up.”

On 12/7 staff noted: "The officer told me that the owner's daughter called in saying that Kej had attacked her mom (owner), and officer stated that the owner had marks on her, but per conversation with owner, the owner stated these are bruises/marks from Kej being too rough with her - no actual bite wounds."

On 12/7 staff noted: "Inquired about tonight's events and gathered behavioral information. Owner is 77 years old and found the dog a year ago. She regularly takes the dog to the dog park, where he interacts well with other dogs. He lives with a few cats; while he occasionally chases them, he never hurts them. Owner describes the dog as having a rough play style and being mouthy. She mentioned that due to his rough play, including jumping, she has some bruises, but he has never bitten her to the point of breaking skin, only playful mouthiness. The owner has been wanting to rehome the dog for a while but wants to ensure a good fit.”

On 12/7 officer noted: "Complainant unable to continue to care for dog. Complainant stated dog became aggressive.”
