My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Pico: A Gentle Soul Ready for His Second Chance

Hello friend. My name is Pico, and I’m a three‑year‑old pug mix with a soft heart, a curious spirit, and a story that’s finally turning toward something brighter. If you’re reading this, maybe you’re part of that new beginning.

I was found wandering the streets of Yuma with another pug mix named Degallo—everyone thinks he’s my brother. We stuck close together, confused and unsure of what would happen next. When we were taken to the pound, we waited side by side for someone to come claim us. Days passed. Then weeks. No one ever showed up. I didn’t understand why, but I kept hoping.

Then something wonderful happened. Central Arizona Animal Rescue stepped in and brought us to safety. Now I’m here, cared for and loved, waiting for the person who will look at me and think, “That’s my dog.”

A Little About Me

I’m a gentle, friendly guy who gets along well with other dogs. I’ve been around children and did just fine with them—soft voices, little hands, and lots of giggles don’t bother me at all. I’m not sure how I feel about cats yet, and nobody knows if I’m house‑trained, but I’m eager to learn and even more eager to please.

I’m neutered, microchipped, and current on all my vaccinations. I’m ready for a fresh start, and thanks to that microchip, I’ll never be lost again.

What Makes Me Special

People say I might be a mix of pug and Shar‑Pei, which apparently makes me a “designer breed.” I don’t know much about fancy labels, but I do know that I’ve got the best of both worlds.

Pugs are known for their affectionate nature, their loyalty, and their love of being close to their people. We’re companion dogs through and through. Because of our adorable smooshy faces, we sometimes need a little extra care—especially in hot weather or during heavy activity. Staying cool, avoiding overexertion, and keeping an eye on our breathing are all important.

If I really am part Shar‑Pei, that adds a touch of independence and a calm, thoughtful personality. Shar‑Pei mixes often bond deeply with their families and enjoy a peaceful, steady routine. Put those traits together, and you get a dog who is loving, loyal, and quietly devoted.

What I’m Hoping For

I’m not a demanding dog. I don’t need anything extravagant—just a home where I’m safe, understood, and loved. A soft bed, a gentle hand, and someone who will give me the time and patience to settle in. I’ve been through a lot, but I haven’t lost my hope. I believe there’s someone out there who will see me and know I belong with them.

Maybe that someone is you.

If you’d like to meet me, please e‑mail mike@caaronline.org to set up an appointment. I’ll be here at Central Arizona Animal Rescue, waiting with a wagging tail and an open heart.
