My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello. I'm Matcha. I know-I look intense. I'm a buff-and-white tabby with a serious face and eyes that say "I have seen things." When you first meet me, I might seem a little fierce. That's not on purpose. I'm just cautious. New people, new noises, new situations-I like to take a moment to decide if everything is safe. Sometimes my cautious face gets mistaken for anger. I promise I'm not mad. I'm just thinking very hard. But here's the secret: once you pet me, everything changes. A gentle scratch, a kind hand, and suddenly I'm all softness and affection. I lean in, I purr, and I turn into the sweetest boy you could imagine. I love being loved-I just need help getting there. My name is Matcha because I'm a little bitter at first glance, but warm, calming, and comforting once you take that first sip.
Thank you for being gentle with me. I'm really glad you did.

More about this shelter

Founded in 1955, Woods Humane Society is a nonprofit organization which receives no tax funds, but is supported by donations, grants, bequests, fundraising events and fees for services. Woods is independent of San Luis Obispo County Animal Services, but works in close cooperation with them and other animal groups in the county for the welfare of all animals.

Woods now cares for over 3,000 cats and dogs each year at our facilities in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero until they can be united with loving forever families. We bring in animals from other shelters where they are less likely to be adopted and from individuals who are no longer able to care for their pets. Woods is committed to finding loving homes for all healthy and treatable pets, no matter how long it takes. With our behavior and veterinary resources, we are able to go the extra mile for animals in need.
