Rescue Story

Toby was rescued on November 25, 2024, from a severe animal-hoarding situation where 208 dogs were living in poor conditions.

At first, he was frightened of human touch and very cautious, but as he settled into the centre, he has been slowly opening his heart. Now he enjoys gentle affection, rubs himself against people, and shows brighter, more confident behaviour every day. His social skills continue to grow beautifully with time.

With People

Toby is a little shy at first, but he will take treats from people. He prefers to build trust before being touched — usually it takes about 3 days to a week for him to feel comfortable.

Once bonded, he allows petting and can be gently picked up by placing an arm under his belly.

He has not yet been tested with children under 13.

With Other Dogs

Toby is friendly with dogs of similar size and also responds positively to smaller dogs. Even if another dog challenges him, he usually avoids conflict rather than reacting.

He gains confidence from being around other dogs and feels more secure when he has a canine companion nearby.

With Cats

Not yet tested.

Energy Level

Low to moderate. Toby is generally calm and enjoys resting quietly.

Walks

He walks well in quiet areas but feels scared in busy, high-traffic environments.

Other Behaviours

• Does not guard food with people or dogs

• May bark when he wants something or when he sees unfamiliar people

• Uses both pee pads indoors and goes potty outside

A Message from Toby

Toby is a gentle, sensitive soul. He came in with very little experience with people and was initially afraid of hands, but he has been making wonderful progress. Even early on, he would wag his tail happily when he saw people — he wasn’t rejecting humans, just cautious and curious. That curiosity is what helps him learn so quickly.

He is still learning how to walk on leash and explore the world. With someone he trusts, he already does much better on walks. He may need patience in the beginning, but his potential for growth is huge.

Toby is thoughtful, observant, and quietly curious — he watches new sounds and moving people with his head tilted, taking it all in. With time, love, and gentle guidance, he will blossom into a deeply loving and loyal companion.

More about this rescue

Adopt Korean Rescue is a volunteer-based federally registered not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless and unwanted dogs in South Korea find a new home in Canada.

We love Korean dogs. Many of them live in chains, give birth on the side of the road, or wander around with their pups. Some of them get caught and end up at dog meat farms or high-kill shelters in South Korea. They luckily meet us just before euthanasia or after many years of living in dog meat farms. We exist to hold their paws and help them find a forever home in Canada full of joy and happiness.

Our dog rescue work depends on our flight volunteers. They help us safely bring our dogs from Korea to Vancouver or Toronto airports, where the dogs will find loving forever or foster homes.
