Meet Meg!
Meg is a wonderful, affectionate, energetic, 4 1/2 year old Shepherd/Aussie/Border Collie mix (we think!) who loves people of all ages, gets along great with indoor cats and dogs that she knows, needs exercise but can also snooze and cuddle. She is leash reactive and she has lots of prey drive which has gotten her into trouble. She needs a large fenced yard or targeted exercise to burn of all that energy.

Meg has a lot of wonderful attributes and is a fantastic dog in so many ways:
• She has a wonderful, sweet disposition
• Great with people and loves to meet them
• Great with indoor cats, at least when the cat is used to a dog.
• Great with dogs she knows, she knows how to speak ‘dog’ and play well with others. She loves to play
and roughhouse with her dog friends!
• Great with kids; is calm and not bossy or herding. Of course we still always make sure interactions are
supervised, as much for Meg as for our grandchildren.
• Affectionate and cuddly, she would love to take over your couch, but she will share!
• Very food driven, not very toy driven. We have not been able to get her to play fetch with a ball but she
has shown interest in Frisbee.
• Does not beg, does not jump on people, knows how to ‘settle down’, knows how to greet guests.
• Is not crate trained but is fine with the run of the house
• Has an amazing bladder and can spend all day inside
• Even though she is a high energy dog, she does have an ‘off’ switch!
• Loves riding in the car for both short and long trips
• Does not resource guard and is fine with other dogs visiting her house (with proper introductions)
• Fine with groomer and vet; trusts people
• She knows basic commands but her recall is sporadic
• She is afraid of thunder, fireworks and gunfire
• She does occasionally ‘counter surf’, so food needs to be kept out of harm’s way, especially when she is
home alone
• Needs slow introductions to other dogs so she is comfortable and gets to know them

Meg is leash reactive, so she is looking for a home experienced with leash and fence reactivity. When on walks she may lunge and bark depending on the proximity and intensity of the other dog. We've seen significant improvement in this area, but it will be something her future family will need to continue to work on. There have been two instances when Meg was off leash and bit a nearby dog; both dogs needed some veterinary care afterwards. This appears to be an extension of her prey drive rather than dog aggression. Her adoptive home will need to be committed to not letting her roam free, making sure there is a safe way to keep her under control while on a walk, and be strict about having her under command when outside doors are opening.

Meg would be probably be great with a bigger dog as a brother or sister, as she gets along well with other dogs when she is properly introduced. With her high prey drive, Meg would do best paired with dogs who don't act like prey. She's consistently done well with larger dogs, and seems to make friends easier with males.

Meg would benefit from a family who has worked through some of these issues before and who has the confidence to guide her in these more intense moments. She will not be a dog park dog, but she is an amazing companion for someone looking to fulfill her through more intentional means of exercise such as hiking,
running, agility or scent work, etc.

We will provide full veterinary records. The adoption fee will be donated to Rescue Network MN. If you are interested in learning more about Meg, contact us at dglthompson at gmail dot com.

---------------

The best way to show interest in an animal is to submit an adoption application by visiting our website (www.rescuenetworkmn.org).

Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, heartworm test (dogs), FIV/FeLV test (cats), dewormed, and microchip implant (including registration).

Rescue Network is strictly foster based which means all adoptable animals are in a home and there cannot be a meet until an application is submitted and approved. We have no way of knowing the breeds in the animals. All breeds listed are best guess.
