Story
WEACT visited the Wanju Animal Shelter for the second phase of rescues as part of the Save Us Project (Monthly Sponsorship), which aims to give new lives to dogs facing euthanasia. On the day of our visit, we were overwhelmed with shock. The shelter's exterior, barely held together by tarps, looked more like a prison than a kennel. Inside, large dogs were tethered to short leashes in cramped spaces, each struggling to survive. These dogs had been living for years on just a 50cm-long leash. While they were able to eat and drink enough to survive, there was no sign of a life worth living for these animals. WEACT rescued five dogs suffering in the cold winter, including #weact_camel, from the Wanju Shelter.

Meet Penny, a 6-year-old Basenji mix with a heart full of love and a spirited personality. Originally from Mexico, Penny made her way to California in December 2020 and was quickly adopted. However, she was returned when her previous family found out they were expecting a baby, and Penny wasn’t comfortable around the little one. Penny is a sweet and loving dog who thrives in the right environment. She’s fully house trained, never has accidents inside, and is a joy to have around. Penny enjoys long walks and playing with her toys, but she also loves relaxing and taking naps next to her favorite people. While Penny is not good with other dogs, cats, or kids, she is an ideal companion in a home where she can be the sole focus of attention. She’s working on her reactivity to other dogs on walks, so a patient family willing to help her through her anxiety would be the perfect fit. If you’re looking for a loyal and affectionate dog who will shower you with love and appreciate a calm, dog-free home, Penny is ready to become a cherished member of your family.

Sonny and Cher were found running the streets in South LA, weaving in and out of traffic and circling the blocks scavenging and desperate for food.  He had on a collar so our director watched them for a good 30-40 minutes, hoping they would run home... They suddenly ended up on the steps to the 77th Police Station where they found some old pizza in a planter.  They then proceeded to patrol access and people were too afraid to approach the entrance to the Police station with them guarding the steps, and no one came out or stopped to help, so with only 2 cans of cat food and 1/2 a sandwich from lunch our director decided to see if they would be friends or foes.  Immediately Cher ran up and said hello -- it took about 20 minutes but she was able to get her to jump in the car... Sonny was a whole other story ... it took about 2 hours to catch him, but eventually, the car-trap worked and the duo, as if finally sensing they were safe, curled up into each other for a long rest.  Neither dog was chipped, Cher was in heat, and Sonny was her devoted bodyguard ... we don't know if/when/how they came together -- but once they were both fixed the bond was broken.  He is SUCH a little love -- he does have a bit of separation anxiety now -- but that's likely because he finally feels safe.  He is gentle and sweet and seems to have been potty trained but had clearly never been on a leash and it didn't seem like he was touched very much -- now he LOVES it! And he's getting used to the leash and is a champ in a crate - such a fast learner and a very good boy. We understand you are excited to adopt a new fur family rescue, however, we are a small rescue so please no calls. All the information we have for this animal is in this description please read the entire description. If you want more information please email us at info@gunterslegacy.org and we will try to respond.  We do not adopt out-of-state. We do not adopt to homes with children under the age of 10 years old. You must live within 1.5 hours of Vallejo. We do require a home check (no exceptions), We try to match each animal with the best fit for the animal.  Our adoption fees are not negotiable.  we do not have a facility we are foster-based and we are not a first come first serve rescue If you are interested in potentially adopting please review our adoption process (do not skip to the application without reading or we will reject your application) and application on our and criteria and if you wish to continue please complete our application on our website at www.gunterslegacy.org/adopt Josh would do better as an only dog. He came from a shelter they believed had been hit by a car he had a broken pelvis and injured leg, but we are fairly sure he was beaten. He was terrified of anything like a broom and pees and poops himself.  He's getting better every day. He needs a quiet home, cats are okay, but no male dogs. He can be a sweet boy but wants to trust but we can see it in his eyes as he sizes up every situation. He loves playing with the female dogs in his foster home and can spend hours outside just running and playing.  He weighs about 9 pounds, is microchipped and has been fully vaccinated. Neuter to be announced still recovering from a broken pelvis and injured leg. Please consider adopting a senior dog. They are passed over routinely in shelters and Chihuahua senior dogs who are black are then the number 2 breed most euthanized in shelters. Adopt don't shop! ##1371753##
