Recommend labwork, FNAs/diagostics of subcutaneous masses, and dental procedure. P does not do well with restraint, becomes resistive and difficult to restraint; will need sedation for diagnostics. In need of urgent rescue.

This adorable 1-2 year old, 16-pound mix (our best guess is Beagle/Chihuahua, but your guess is as good as ours!) has the softest coat you'll ever pet— and an equally soft, gentle soul.   Rescued from a shelter, Boondoggle is the kind of dog who doesn't rush into new situations. Instead, he quietly observes, takes his time, and once he decides you're one of his people, you'll discover an incredibly loyal companion who simply wants to be by your side.   A Day in the Life   Boondoggle starts his day bright and early around 6:00 a.m. alongside his foster mom. They head outside for a quick potty break before breakfast, and while he's still building confidence outdoors, he's happiest returning home where he feels safe and secure.   He's not much of a foodie and prefers to graze throughout the day, slowly working his way through about a cup of kibble rather than eating it all at once.   Most of his day is spent doing what he does best— lounging peacefully near his favorite person. Whether his foster is working, relaxing, or moving from room to room, Boondoggle is content simply keeping her company. At bedtime, he sleeps on a cozy spot on the bedroom floor, occasionally hopping onto the bed for a quick cuddle before returning to his own sleeping place.   A Gentle Soul   When Boondoggle first arrived in foster care, the world felt like a scary place. Everything made him nervous. He wasn't interested in food, treats, toys, or exploring.   His foster patiently took him everywhere with her, showing him that life could be safe again.   Within about a week, Boondoggle's true personality began to shine. He discovered the joy of toys, started asking for snacks, and became a devoted little shadow who follows his favorite person from room to room. Today he's a sweet, affectionate cuddle bug who loves relaxing close by and soaking up quiet companionship.   He's happiest with gentle affection rather than constant excitement. Think of him as more cat-like than dog-like -- calm, observant, independent, and perfectly content spending hours lounging beside you.   Quiet, Polite, and Easy to Live With   Boondoggle is one of the easiest houseguests his foster has ever had.   He's fully housetrained and has never had an accident inside the home. When left alone, he quietly has free roam of the house and simply waits patiently near the front door until his family returns. He doesn't chew furniture, dig, bark, or get into mischief around the house.   Well...except for one hilarious exception.   Boondoggle has an undeniable love affair with paper. If there's a piece of paper within reach, he'll happily claim it as his newest treasure. He's been known to grab papers during walks, sneak pages from the printer, and even peel a poster off the wall just so he could chew it. Keeping important papers tucked away may become part of your routine— and you'll probably laugh every time you catch him trying to 'recycle' something.   Around Other Dogs   Boondoggle is wonderfully polite around other dogs. He's curious and interested but never pushy or reactive. When he meets another dog, he's more likely to observe than bark or pull toward them.   He's simply a gentle boy who prefers taking things at his own pace.   Walking With Boondoggle   One area where Boondoggle is still growing is his confidence outside.   The outdoors can still feel overwhelming, and when something worries him, his instinct is to stop and freeze. He responds beautifully to calm encouragement, a loose leash, and allowing him to process the world in his own time.   The good news? He's already making progress.   He doesn't pull on leash, isn't interested in chasing squirrels, and is wonderfully quiet on walks. Birds, however, definitely catch his attention!   His forever family should simply be prepared to celebrate the small victories as his confidence continues to grow.   His Perfect Home   Boondoggle is looking for a patient, understanding family who appreciates gentle souls and knows that trust is something special to earn.   He isn't searching for marathon hikes or busy adventures. After arriving at DPS from a Central Valley shelter, he's slowly learning that life can be safe, toys are wonderful, and humans might not be so scary after all.   Every single day, Pez gets a little braver— and watching that transformation is something truly special.   Pez's Daily Routine   Pez is an easy roommate who loves a predictable schedule. He sleeps quietly through the night in an X-pen in his foster family's bedroom until everyone wakes up around 8:00 a.m.   His day starts with a potty break outside, followed by breakfast. He's becoming more confident about mealtime, though he still occasionally prefers to graze instead of finishing everything at once.   Since his foster family lives in a condo, Pez heads outside every few hours for potty breaks. During the day, he's happy lounging quietly in the living room, entertaining himself with toys or simply observing the world around him.   Dinner is around 6:30 p.m., followed by one final potty break between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m. Once tucked into his X-pen for the night, he settles immediately and sleeps peacefully until morning.   A Gentle Heart That's Learning to Trust   Pez is one of those dogs who reminds us that healing doesn't happen overnight.   When he first arrived, he was frightened and confused, and while he's still very shy around people, he's already making beautiful progress.   He now spends time relaxing in the same room as his foster family. He happily accepts treats from their hands. Sometimes he'll wander over just to see what they're doing in another room. Occasionally he'll even sneak over to sniff a foot—or offer a tiny lick—before quietly retreating again.   He isn't ready for cuddles yet. If someone reaches to pet him unexpectedly, he'll usually scoot away. Being picked up still makes him nervous, and he's much more comfortable simply existing nearby while he builds trust at his own pace.   One of his biggest milestones came during a family gathering with seven people in the house. Instead of hiding all day, he gradually relaxed enough to play with his toys and even nap peacefully in the same room. For a shy puppy like Pez, that was enormous progress.   Toys Are His Love Language   If you want to see the real Pez, hand him a toy.   His playful personality immediately shines through as he proudly trots around carrying his latest prize.   One of his foster family's favorite memories happened during his first few days. Pez discovered the basket of dog toys tucked under a bench— and decided every single one belonged in his safe space. For days, he made countless trips, proudly carrying one toy after another back to his little collection. Watching him carefully build his treasure pile was equal parts adorable and hilarious.   He's still learning that socks and slippers are not toys, but he responds well to gentle redirection and has never shown interest in chewing furniture.   Looking for a Four-Legged Best Friend   While humans still make Pez a little nervous, other animals bring out his happiest self.   He adored spending time with another DPS foster dog and desperately wanted to play. He's done wonderfully with his foster family's cat, frequently following her around in hopes she'll join the fun (she hasn't quite agreed yet). He has also interacted politely with other dogs, reading their social cues well and backing off appropriately when another dog asks for space. And at his former shelter, he was in playgroup with the big dogs - he's not scared of any of them!   Pez seems to gain confidence simply by being around other animals. During one walk, he happily followed another dog all the way around the block. When his canine friend stopped to chat with a neighbor, Pez refused to continue until the whole 'pack' was together again.   A confident resident dog would likely be the greatest gift his forever family could give him.   Quiet, Thoughtful & Learning Every Day   Pez is still developing his leash skills, but he's already making great progress. He enjoys leisurely sniffing adventures and willingly follows gentle guidance. Loud noises can still startle him, but he quickly recovers.   He's also doing well with housetraining. After a few early accidents while adjusting to his foster home, he's been reliably keeping his condo clean. Like many young rescue dogs, he'll likely need a little refresher when transitioning into a new home and routine.   He sleeps calmly in his X-pen, settles nicely when left home alone, and has grown from initially howling during absences to simply curling up for a nap.   His Perfect Forever Home   Pez isn't looking for perfection—he's looking for patience.   His dream family will understand that trust can't be rushed and will allow him to blossom at his own pace.   His ideal home would include:   A friendly, confident resident dog who can show him that people are safe. A calm household with adults or older, respectful children. Patient adopters who won't expect instant cuddles but will celebrate every small breakthrough. From the moment she arrived, she has been social, confident, and eager to connect with people and other dogs.   At first, she was very much a “velcro dog,” wanting to follow her person everywhere and stay close at all times. As she has settled in, she has gained confidence and now also enjoys independent downtime, often choosing to nap in another room once she feels comfortable.   She is incredibly curious about everything and everyone. On walks, she regularly stops to wag her tail at passersby, fully expecting— and often receiving— pets and attention. If she recognizes someone she’s met before, she may even whine a little in excitement until she gets her greeting, as if to say, 'Hi friend! I love you!'   She is affectionate and social, but not overly clingy once she’s settled. She enjoys being near her people, but also knows how to relax on her own.   Daily Routine   Praline starts her day bright and early around 6:00 a.m. with a quick potty break, followed by breakfast around 7:00 a.m. She enjoys a solid play session for about 45 minutes afterward, then settles in for a long morning nap that can last until late morning or even noon.   Her afternoons are a nice balance of activity and rest. She typically goes out for a 30–40 minute walk mid-day, followed by a small snack. After more play and nap time, she eats lunch around 2:00 p.m. She enjoys another walk in the late afternoon (around 4:00–6:00 p.m.), dinner at 7:00 p.m., and a final potty break around 10:30 p.m.     Praline is highly food motivated, so meals are scatter-fed to slow her down and turn eating into a fun enrichment game she genuinely loves.   Social Behavior (Dogs, Cats, Kids)   Praline is very social with other dogs and generally plays well, especially with dogs that match her energy. Some older or lower-energy dogs may find her enthusiasm a bit much after a while, but her play style is typically gentle and engaging, and she is often invited back into play again and again.   She has shown curiosity and playfulness toward cats, though her exposure has been limited.   She is friendly with children of various ages, including toddlers and older kids. She is affectionate and often gives gentle licks, but she does get excited and may jump or nibble when overstimulated, as is typical of a puppy her age, so she does best with supervision around small children.   Energy Level & Play Style   Praline loves fetch, loves being outside, and absolutely loves engaging with people and other dogs. She can run, play, and explore for long stretches, and still come home ready for more interaction.   That said, she is still a puppy and can become overstimulated. When she reaches that point, she responds very well to redirection. A treat tossed into her crate is often all it takes; she willingly settles in and falls asleep quickly for a solid rest.   Leash Skills, Drive & Travel   Praline walks well on leash and also enjoys running alongside her person. She is still learning not to criss-cross in front when running, but overall handles leash work well.   She does not bark at other dogs, even when they bark at her, which is notable given her age and energy level.   She loves chasing lizards, followed by birds and squirrels. She is an excellent car passenger and happily hops in for rides and adventures.   House & Crate Training   Praline is house trained with consistent outings every 4ish hours.   She is also crate trained. She sleeps in her crate through the night and will often choose to nap there during the day. The crate is an effective tool for helping her settle when she becomes overstimulated. She does not yet respond to the word 'crate', but happily goes in for a treat.   Training & Intelligence   Praline is extremely smart and highly food motivated, which makes her very trainable.   She quickly mastered an intermediate-level puzzle toy in just a few minutes and is already working on more advanced enrichment games. She has learned “sit” and “down” quickly, though she sometimes mixes them up as she continues to learn. She is currently working on “stay.”   She loves using her brain and thrives when given tasks, puzzles, or training sessions.   Ideal Home   Praline would do best in an active home that can match her energy and provide consistent structure, exercise, and enrichment. A home with another young, playful dog would be ideal, or an active family with older children who can participate in her energy and play needs.   She is best suited for someone who enjoys an engaged, interactive dog who wants to be part of everything.   Favorite Things   Praline’s foster home is full of favorite moments— watching her excitement when she sees her “regulars” for pets, her joy during fetch sessions, her dedication to food puzzles, and her comedic habit of collecting questionable treasures on walks.   She is equally lovable when she is zooming around outside or curled up for a peaceful nap.
