Story
Blue is an approximately 2 year old Shepherd looking for his furrever home. Currently we are seeking someone knowledgeable with the Shepherd breed to continue with training and give him the structure and support he needs!Blue has been in foster with our Animal Kind certified trainer, heres what she has to say: It's difficult to guess what a dog will be like in a variety of contexts that you haven't yet seen them in, but here I can speak to what I have seen while with me.Handler FocusedHe's the most handler focused dog I've ever worked with. Handler is whoever has the ball. He will likely be reliable off leash because nothing in the environment is more interesting than the handler and ball. He doesn't have great social skills with either humans or dogs, but also he's not super interested in either, so he'll mind his business if they mind theirs. For humans looking to gain his trust they just need to be equipped with treats and/or toys and not try to get touchy (he thinks that is weird). For dogs, it's possible he could develop dog friends over time, but he currently snaps at them in a herdy way, which is rude and not a great friend-making behaviour.Repetitive Leash biting / suckingThis is nearly completely resolved but needs maintenance to stick. He will regress if it's not kept up. I think an adopter should consider that his desire to have something in his mouth is a NEED for self-soothing. I keep 2 balls in my treat bag on all walks, in case I lose one. He can go for longer and longer without needing the ball, but when he asks for it, which he'll do now by looking to me, I deliver it. Without the ball, he will regress to leash sucking/biting. If he does grab the leash, I offer the ball, if he doesn't take the ball, I hold his harness until he drops the leash. The tension on the leash is a trigger for the grabbing.High Energy -> Over-arousalHe is full of energy and you can see this arousal tipping over to anxious, impulsive, or frustrated behaviour if his needs aren't met and/or he's allowed to get worked up into a frenzy. A ball in the mouth is a great pacifier in most cases but I'm also cognizant of avoiding letting him get too worked up. For example, when I'm taking him out for walks, I do it in a swift series of steps without lag or delay, and put a ball into his mouth at a very specific point (front steps). If I can't find a ball and end up hunting around, and then my dog barks, and then my partner comes in, etc etc, he will get worked up. An adopter should be prepared to be calm and patient with his somewhat erratic behaviours and expect them to cool down over time with age and the creation of rituals and patterns. He loves predictability and order! No heavy hands. If you are interested in adoption please fill out an online application or email/call us at 604 823 6612/chilliwack@spca.bc.ca Primary Color: Tan Secondary Color: Black Weight: 28.5 Age: 2yrs 7mths 0wks
