Story
Sweetie Boy was adopted from the shelter in 2024. He is 3 years old. He is a very sweet boy, as his name suggests. He loves snuggles and hugs. He will try to sit in your lap and give you kisses. Sweetie Boy loves kitties, but won't chase, bug or get in their business. He will eat their poop if left unattended. Sweetie Boy is reactive to seeing other dogs on tv, or when dogs bark nearby. He does not like loud noises on tv, and sometimes reacts to characters on tv who are crying. It makes him very anxious and he will pace or bark- or both. The perfect home for Sweetie Boy would not have any other dogs. He can become anxious and reactive and attack another dog. He has never attacked a cat or a person (child or adult). Sweetie Boy is reactive is over people eating food. We have to separate dogs with a gate in order to keep other dogs safe. Sweetie Boy's ideal home would be with someone who is home often and able to give him a lot of attention and redirection- and snuggles for days!

When staff would try walking her she was very reactive while on leash showing aggression towards other dogs as well as people. We agreed to bring her in to work with her and see if she could get past that. We found she was severely under socialized and reactive on leash. She has been with us for quite a while now and has made remarkable progress. She is an absolutely amazing young girl but will need someone who can continue with introducing her to new people and animals so she can continue building her confidence.   Current Behavior: Goose has learned how fun other dogs can be. Her best friend is a large male German Shepherd who she absolutely adores. However, she does seem to have some issues with certain dogs and will need someone willing to continue working on her socialization skills with other animals. She would do best in a home with a large confident male dog she can learn from and play with. She did not like the female husky she met here so she might not do as well with other female dogs - at least not initially. She has met several people and is amazing with an introduction to them. She also did wonderful at the vet when we went. She will show aggression towards strangers at the gate.   Goose is an amazing young girl who learns quickly and is very treat motivated. She has mastered fetch and tug in the time she has been here. She ignores the cats and is the type of girl who stays right next to her loved one. I can open the gate and she will stay by my side as we walk around on the ditch. She also has wonderful recall to a whistle and/or her name.  Goose is leash trained, crate trained, house trained, dog door trained, and eager to please. She does have some separation anxiety so will need a secure crate when her loved one must leave her alone - not a typical wire crate but a heavy duty bar crate. She has been loose in the house and has done well if I leave for short periods but initially she should have a crate until she learns the rules of the house. I have left her and her bestie outside when I run errands and she does wonderfully. She will bark and whine when she can hear me outside - so an apartment might not be an ideal situation. But other than that I think she is a wonderful, extremely intelligent girl who loves her family and is just a sponge for knowledge. She is an absolute gem with children - when the grandchildren are around she is glued to their sides keeping an eye on them.     Spayed, microchipped, and current on all vaccinations Adoption Fee $200 We do welcome out-of-state adoptions. Adopters must make arrangements to come out to meet and complete the adoption. The link to our online application is at the top of the bio or you can send an email to request the application or download it from the main site www.almosthomenm.org and email it to adopt@almosthomenm.org Dogs are seen by appointment only after an application has been submitted and approved. If you have other dogs it is recommended you bring them out to to the meeting.  Steps for adoption: Read bio, complete the application, once approved you will receive an email asking you when you would like to come out to meet the pet, we will schedule an appointment, and then directions will be emailed to you. Adoption fees are cash only.   If you would like to provide toys and snacks for the dogs in our care while they wait for their happily ever afters we would truly appreciate it. Story
Sophie is a rescue from the local shelter here. She is well behaved and very loving and smart. She likes to protect her family, and person. She is about 4 years old, weighs about 100 lbs. She needs to be in a home with someone who is there often , can be taken on walks, and having space to run around would be ideal. I did a 12 week class with her, and she was very adapt to learn. She's good on a leash with frequent walks, and understands heel and sit. She's great with my son, who is 5. He can climb all over her and she stays calm and understanding.Willing to drive Sophie out of state for the right adopter.
