Story
Location: Heron Lake, MN Elle is a 7-year-old Bernese mountain dog who came into rescue after she was retired from a lifetime of breeding. She was malnourished and required extensive vetting. She also has hip dysplasia and arthritis, requiring occasional pain meds for stiffness/discomfort, but overall gets around very well. She is great with all sizes of dogs in her foster home as well as cats. She has not been around children, but given she can easily be spooked, I think she would do best in a home without young children. She has had minimal accidents in our home. She has used a kennel, but we have just been leaving her loose as she has not been destructive at all and tends just to sit on the rug in front of our sliding glass door. She rides well in the car, but needs a little help climbing into it. She is a pretty independent dog and does not seek out much for attention, unless you have snacks. She is much happier now than when she first came to rescue, and likes to greet you when you come home after a long day. She does really well climbing stairs outside, but has struggled to regularly climb them in the home. Because of this and her orthopedic issues, I do think a home with minimal stairs would be best for her. She also will need a fenced in yard for her safety as she spooks easily. She absolutely LOVES being outside and is very content to sit on our deck on a nice day. Overall, she has been wonderful to foster and would be perfect for a family who is willing to take in an older dog who has had years of neglect and just needs a happy retirement home. --------------- The best way to show interest in an animal is to submit an adoption application by visiting our website (www.rescuenetworkmn.org). Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, heartworm test (dogs), FIV/FeLV test (cats), dewormed, and microchip implant (including registration). Rescue Network is strictly foster based which means all adoptable animals are in a home and there cannot be a meet until an application is submitted and approved. We have no way of knowing the breeds in the animals. All breeds listed are best guess.
