Story
We are learning more and more about what Margie has been hiding under that shell every single day. When she first arrived, she was covered in ticks, trembling, underweight, and seemed ready to give up on the world. At 5 years old and 39.2 pounds, we believe Margie is a Black Mouth Cur mix based on her markings and build. She is so much more than her past and will make an excellent companion to a patient family. Since arriving, we have now seen her: - Play with other dogs, something that once seemed impossible, as she would initially growl or cower. - Take treats directly from a hand (and even sit politely for them!) - Find her voice. Her bark, once absent, is now a sweet sound we hear as she communicates with us. - Discover toys. She has a deep love for a good bone. - Roll happily in the grass and turf, one of the sweetest sights we get to see. Margie is still learning that the world can be a safe and kind place. Because of this, she would likely do best in a home with another dog of similar size and medium energy to help guide her. Loud or rambunctious young children may be overwhelming, but gentle, understanding kiddos ages 8+ could be a good fit. As always, a meet-and-greet will be required for any potential siblings, canine or human. Cat testing is available upon request. If you’d like to meet our darling Margie and be the soft landing of her journey, please submit an application. We’d love to introduce you.

Story
*FOSTER OR FOSTER-TO-ADOPT PREFERRED* If your home is quiet, patient, and full of gentle understanding, Sweetie may be the dog who needs you most. At just 31 pounds and a bit underweight, Sweetie is a smaller medium-sized girl we’ve labeled as a Black Mouth Cur/medium mixed breed, thanks to her beautiful coat and soulful face. She is an adult dog at 3 1/2 years old. Right now, her story is one of fear and uncertainty. Sweetie spends her days being carried outside to potty, quietly eating her meals, and curling up in a corner, too afraid to explore the world around her. She hasn’t yet discovered toys, snuggles, or the simple joys of being a dog... and we know her true personality is in there, just waiting to come out. She needs a safe place. A soft landing. Someone willing to give her time, patience, and compassion as she learns that the world can be kind. If you need an immediate cuddler and "easy" dog, Sweetie is not going to be the fit for you. Another confident, social, friendly dog may be helpful for Sweetie's progress. Cat testing will be done prior if there is a cat in the foster home. Fostering with The Humane Society of Oldham County means we provide all medical care, food, crates, and supplies. You provide the love and space she needs to begin again. If you can be Sweetie’s helping hand, please apply here: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/foster/HSOC/Dog

Story
Star is such a good girl. We have had her since she was a puppy and she has been a wonderful girl. She is very well behaved and great in the house. She is housetrained and good on a leash. She is sweet and snuggly. Very affectionate and great with people and kids. Like all dogs her age and similar breeds, she does need an active home, a fenced in yard, and an active family. She is good with other dogs. Cats are unknown. If you have an interest in adding this wonderful girl to your family, please call 502-445-2749

Story
Meet Maisie! Good with dogs? Yes. Maisie plays enthusiastically with medium and large dogs. She is a high energy girl and loves to play with other dogs her size with similar play style. Good with cats? No. Maisie has a high prey drive which could be typical of her breed. We do not recommend a home for her with other small animal pets. Good with kids? Maisie doesn't know her physical limits or boundaries yet. It's not aggression but clumsiness and enthusiasm. She may do well in a home with older children. She is working on not jumping up but could easily knock small children over. Energy level? This is a high energy girl who delights in play, exercise, walks/hikes and adventure. She loves to ride in the car! She is athletic and strong. Medical/behavioral needs? Maisie has no known medical needs. She does resource guard her food from other dogs. She does not display similar behavior with humans. She eats voraciously, but she takes treats very gently. House trained? Maisie is mostly house trained, but she does have occasional accidents. Her communication is the same whether she wants to go out or she's hungry, so she needs someone to teach her a specific communication for needing to go potty. Animal Characteristics? Maisie is a super intelligent young dog who will thrive with obedience training and who loves a mental challenge. When she sets her mind to something (finding a hidden toy or solving a doggie puzzle, for example) she is determined and tenacious to the end! She knows the following commands: Out of here. Off now! Potty outside? Go inside. Thirsty? Hungry? Come! Get your toy! And she understands directional hand gestures. She likes to show off her toys, but she doesn't want them taken from her. She doesn't get mean--just very enthusiastic about the game "keep away." Although she is slow to warm to strangers, once she has developed trust (treats and patience help) she displays strong desire to be near her people. You’ll know you’ve arrived when she nudges your hand to be petted. She is very affectionate, loves belly rubs and will try to climb up and sleep on your lap. If that’s not possible, she will nap at your feet. Although she will go and sleep in her crate, if the door is closed, she barks and cries. She would much rather sleep on the bed with her people. Maisie will be a very loyal and loving dog to the right family!
