Stella came to us when we got an urgent plea from a good Samaritan to take a dog belonging to an estranged relative. This poor pup was being kept in a back room, chained to an old broken mattress, often with no food or water. Being a large, energetic puppy, she was often difficult to handle, but rather than trying to train her, Stella had been beaten when she made mistakes. She was one of the saddest and most depressing examples of neglect we had ever seen.
Stella shows just how resilient a pupper can be. Think of her as a shy Party girl.
After gaining her health and strength back, she spent several months living in a special board and train facility where she learned manners and how to greet people in a polite way - as well as learning a lot about life itself. She’s learned that humans can be and are loving towards her, and in turn she’s learned she can hang out calmly. However she still is (and will always be) FULL of energy and would love a very active family.
Her early years have left her with certain behavioral issues around impulse control and meeting new friends which she, with the help of her new family, will need to continue to work on for some time. However this sweet princess wants more than anything to please the humans she knows and trusts. Once she’s comfortable, she just wants to have a good time.
After training camp, Stella was taken in by an amazing foster family who are continuing her training and medication program. She also gets to spend lots of time playing with her foster dog brother and her outlook in life is so joyful.
Stella will always need a special environment, though, with forever parents who are willing to help her learn about the world at her pace. She will do best in a quiet home with no small children as she can be overly exuberant when unsure.
That said, with a few slow introductions and the right perdonality match, Stella could live with another dog, but she would prefer to be in a family as the only pet. The ideal family would be one where someone is home most of the time or can bring her to an appropriate day camp program.
Stella still goes back to training camp from time to time and sees a special behavioral vet who proscribes her medication to help her deal with some of her anxiety behaviors.
Her camp carer says, “Stella is having a great time at camp! She is always curious about new smells and enjoys the company of her human friends. She loves to run when she's in the big yard and enjoy the tranquil sounds at times. Stella is such a beauty and we love having her here at camp. She's got personality and energy for miles and thats one of our favorite things about her. Stella has so much personality; she is silly, full of so much excitement and energy. She also can be super sweet and whenever she sees you coming toward her, her butt just wont stop wiggling!
