Story
At just 8 weeks old, Patsy has already overcome more than any puppy should. Found alone as a stray by animal control, this sweet little Border Collie/Lab mix could have had a very different story — but instead, Patsy has shown everyone around her just how full of love and trust her tiny heart truly is. Patsy is the kind of puppy who wants nothing more than to be close to her people. Her gentle, affectionate personality makes it impossible not to fall in love with her. She loves playing with her foster siblings and learning how much fun it is to just be a puppy. Because she is still so young, Patsy would adapt beautifully to almost any home environment. Whether you are a family with children, another playful dog, or someone looking for a loyal companion to grow with, Patsy is ready to become part of your life and your heart. Like any young puppy, Patsy is still working on her crate and potty training, but she is eager to learn and thrives with patience, love, and consistency. We expect her to grow to around 50 pounds when fully grown. Patsy’s past may have started with uncertainty, but her future deserves to be filled with safety, happiness, and a family who will love her forever. Could that family be yours? Patsy has been dewormed, microchipped, vaccinated for her current age. Since they are not yet neutered, Patsy is not available for adoption outside of the counties contiguous to Bedford County. For more information, please visit our website at www.bhsva.org (opens in new tab) to fill out an adoption application.

Story
Bunny is a hard pup to decide on breed. We are not at all sure what she is. We are guessing Border Collie/Lab mix? She has a little head and skinny legs. She is very cute and fast. She's approximately 3 months old, and 20 pounds. We're not sure if she will be much bigger than a medium size. She is learning to be crate/potty trained. She still has a few accidents in her kennel. She loves to play and can be little rough with puppies smaller than her. She can be a total love bug once she gets her energy out. We think she's not a good choice for young children, because she does not know personal space. She was picked up as a stray and needs a new start in life. Bedford Humane Society has gotten her up to date medically, including her spay. Bunny has been dewormed, microchipped, vaccinated, is too young to test for heartworms but has started on heartworm preventatives and on flea/tick preventative. Bunny's microchip will be registered in her new owner's name by BHS. For more information, please visit our website at www.bhsva.org to fill out an adoption application.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Now that she is no longer emaciated, and has been treated for tick-borne illness, Fia is wowing her foster mom, and everyone else she meets with her beauty. Her two breeds occasionally conflict with one another, as her border collie side wants to herd or chase, and her Pyrenees side wants to guard.  She is learning to manage both those traits as she goes walking with her foster mom around Timberlake, smells squirrels and rabbits, and holds herself back from totally chasing in hot pursuit.  She is housetrained, and learning to manage herself around new people. Fia is one true beauty!    Pretty Fiadh, 2 years old, spayed, and emaciated from starvation, is feeling and looking so much better! It’s been a battle getting her to get her stomach used to food once again. She had a quick vet exam earlier this week and we discovered two tick diseases, so are adding antibiotics for that in addition to extra food, and probiotics. We sure do love From her foster mom: “ Fiadh was found as a starving stray, and the shelter only knew what they saw, in a limited environment. I brought her home to help her get healthier, and to learn who she is, in a home and neighborhood setting.  She’s a beautiful girl, and can be very gentle and affectionate. She’s also sustained trauma along the way, and this affects her day to day behavior. We’ve learned she is deeply afraid of men, even my nice male neighbors. She cowers  at their feet and tries to run away. Seeing men from a distance, makes her turn around and run.  She’s also afraid of loud noises, and other dogs. She wants to play, but their barking threatens her and she has lunged at them, then gotten scared, turned, and run into me, knocking me (at 160 lbs) over.  She’s on leash with me at all times, unless we’re in my house. When we walk, she sees squirrels, pulls hard and chases them. I believe she would kill them.  I read that you have a kitten and we all want her to be safe. I have two grown cats and am using a tall dog gate, to keep them separate from her. Fia was fine with the cat test at the shelter, but I don’t trust her with mine. They sniffed each other thru the gate once, then Fia began jumping up and down, barking loudly, scaring the cat.  She’s very high energy, skinny and remarkably strong; we walk 3 miles a day, and she’d walk further if it were up to her. She seems to love the water, pulling me to the end of my dock, and testing me to see if I’ll let her jump in the lake, to swim after the geese. She’s also a chow hound and a counter surfer, always looking for snacks.  Those of us who foster for the shelter do our best to learn as much as we can about each animal and report back honestly. I hope this information is helpful.”   PLEASE NOTE: This pet has been posted by Friends of Campbell County Animal Control, Rustburg, VA. Story
Lace… imagine you were taken from your home and put in a very loud bare room by yourself. You hide in the corner hoping your family will come … but they’re the ones who left you there …. Still you wait… hiding, afraid to move. A stranger comes and says do you want to get out of here, you go with her even though you don’t know her. She seems kind. So off to another place that you don’t know, you’re still afraid, but after a few days the fear gradually starts to go away. It’s time to start your new life and Bedford Humane Society will help you find it. Lace is a sweet girl, a little over weight but we are working on that. We were told Lace lived with another larger dog and a cat. She would need to meet the dog if there is one in new home, or I’m sure she would be happy being the only dog. Lace would do better in a home with older dog savvy children. Lace is house trained and walks on a leash, she does tend to get between your feet sometimes, she also rides well in a car. Lace is 5 years old. Her vaccinations are current, she is spayed, heart-worm negative and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $300. Knowledge of this herding breed would be helpful when considering adoption. Lace is a very sweet girl who would be a great addition to the right home. For more information please visit our website at www.bhsva.org to fill out an adoption application.
