Story
*FOSTERED IN NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - LOCAL ADOPTERS PREFERRED*  Bitsy is a 17-lb scruffy mixed breed sweetheart, estimated to be around 2–3 years old, with a gentle spirit and the softest little presence. Her story began on a scary note. She came to us through animal control as a terrified stray suffering from a life-threatening prolapse. She had to be safely darted to receive emergency care, which ultimately saved her life. Despite such a rough start, Bitsy is still here, still trying, and quietly hopeful. Bitsy is shy and timid by nature, but once she settles into a predictable routine, she is content, calm, and surprisingly happy. She doesn’t ask for much. Her idea of a perfect day is bed-rotting on a cozy dog bed, soaking up some sunshine, and enjoying the safety of her home. She is very low energy and wonderfully low maintenance for the right person.  She is crate trained, house trained, and once she trusts you, she shows it with the cutest little tail wag that will absolutely steal your heart. Bitsy does best with people who respect her boundaries and allow her to exist quietly without pressure. Bitsy’s biggest quirk (and most important need):Due to past trauma, likely involving a catch pole by animal control, Bitsy has a deeply rooted fear of leash pressure. Despite months of decompression and living with a professional behaviorist, her leash panic is severe. Her trainer has shared that leash walking may be a very long-term goal, if it’s achievable at all. Because of this, Bitsy will not go on walks and requires a securely fenced yard where she can safely potty and sunbathe at her own pace. She won’t be your brewery patio dog or your restaurant companion and that’s okay with her. Bitsy wants peace, predictability, and comfort. Thankfully, her small size makes vet visits manageable since she can be carried when needed. She may also enjoy riding in an enclosed stroller if her future family wants to include her on outings in a way that feels safe for her. Bitsy is currently fostered by Lydia Porter with Hopeful Hearts Canine Collective, and Lydia is committed to offering ongoing support to Bitsy’s adopters even after adoption to help ensure a smooth transition and long-term success. Bitsy isn’t for everyone, but for someone who values a quiet companion, understands trauma, and believes love doesn’t have to look like long walks or big adventures, she could be the most rewarding little roommate imaginable. If you think your home might be her safe place, Bitsy is ready to rest her heart with you. ************************Bitsy is located in a foster home. We are happy to coordinate a meet & greet for pre-approved adopters. To get started, please submit an adoption application at www.jasperslegacy.org/apply-to-adopt Adoption process:Potential adopters complete our online application. From there, we contact them to continue the screening process including checking references, vet checks, and a personal phone interview. Upon completion, potential adopters are pre-approved. From there, potential adopters are put in touch with the foster parent(s) of the dog they are interested in adopting. If a specific dog is not in mind, admins will make suggestions based on who we feel will be good candidates for their home. We take the foster's opinions into high consideration when determining ideal fit for an adoption. Once the dog is determined to be a good fit for the adoptive home, the adopter is given advisement on decompression, training, safety gear, and future preventative vetting. The adoption contract is signed and adoption fee paid to finalize the adoption. ##2466839##
