Pet Location: Wayside’s Canine Behavior Center – I`d love to show off all the cool things I’ve learned at Wayside! Please arrive at the shelter before 4pm on our open adoption days to meet me! My Friends at Wayside say: - I am enrolled in Confidence College. This is a program for dogs to build confidence and learn that the world is not so scary. My adoption comes with a free 30-minute private training session. - I am from a puppy mill situation. I will likely need extra time to adjust to home life. I have lived with other dogs but have not socialized with people. Things like walking on a leash and going through doorways can be challenging for me. Adopting me will be extremely rewarding, but I need time to learn. - I’m a shy dog and need someone willing to be patient with me.- I’m smart and food/treat motivated. - I am eligible for a Slumber Pawty, a 7-10 day in-home trial period. My home needs are: - I need a home with kids 10 years old and older since I tend to be nervous around new people and loud noises. - I must meet other dogs in the home before adoption to make sure they can “show me the ropes.”- A fenced yard is a must for me! I do not know how to walk on a leash, so I need a secure area to go out for potty breaks. - New people and things make me a little nervous. Wayside recommends that I have a low traffic home. - Special Request from Romeo: For my safety, I need to go home in a travel crate. I also need to go home on an anti-slip collar called a martingale collar. For your convenience, we sell them in our retail store, Whiskers and Wags.

She can be a bit shy when meeting new people, but once she decides you’re safe… congratulations, you’ve been promoted to official couch snuggle partner. Her favorite activities include: • Cuddling in bed like she pays the mortgage • Zoomies around the house at random intervals • Being chauffeured in her stroller like the royalty she is • Collecting shoes and shoelaces for… reasons she refuses to explain Mango currently lives in a bustling foster home with 4 big adult dogs, 4 cats, and younger foster puppies, and she handles it like a pro. She respectfully waits while the big dogs eat and happily enjoys her own meals from her bowl like a polite little lady. She’s already learned “sit” and is working on potty training. She also has a deep appreciation for rope toys, stuffed toys, and cozy cuddle spots. Mango would do best with a family that understands that shy pups just need a little patience and love to blossom. Hi, I'm Romeo! I was brought here as a tiny puppy from a place where I was barely getting fed. I was adopted shortly after and recently got returned due to weird circumstances. I suddenly had two injuries- one was my eye which needs to be removed and the other is much more. I have a torn cruciate ligament. The shelter is currently raising money to pay for my surgery but I will need a place to stay for 6-8 weeks with cage rest so I can recover. I'm a sweet boy and get along with everyone, even livestock! If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! This pint-sized boy previously suffered a hip injury, which has healed beautifully, and his happy, playful spirit never missed a beat. Ian is fun, boisterous, and full of contagious joy. He loves attention, enjoys romping around with his toys, and is always ready for a cuddle when playtime winds down. He does well with other dogs and would make a wonderful addition to a home with canine friends. Ian also loves his food and is happily not picky.
