Story
Benson is soon to be `paw-roled` from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with inmate trainers and enrolled in an 8-week training program designed to provide a solid foundation of skills to help them succeed in their new home. These dogs graduate potty trained, crate trained, and with a long list of cues and basic behaviors. To help ensure a successful adoption, adopters receive four training sessions to learn what their dog knows, along with an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. Every dog also goes home with a biothane leash and collar, six months of heartworm prevention, is fully up to date on vaccines and medications, and is spayed or neutered. If you`re looking for a dog to join you on life`s adventures, Benson is ready to sign up.This handsome boxer mix is a big, athletic boy with an even bigger heart. Benson loves people and never misses an opportunity to soak up attention. In fact, one of his favorite hobbies is forgetting how large he is and attempting to climb directly into your personal space for cuddles.Benson has plenty of energy and would thrive with an active family that enjoys walks, hikes, road trips, or any excuse to get outside. He loves having something to do and someone to do it with.During his time in the Paws in the Pen program, Benson has been building his manners, learning new skills, and channeling his enthusiasm into becoming the best companion he can be. He`s smart, eager to engage, and always ready for the next challenge. At the end of the day, Benson is a loyal, affectionate dog looking for a family to call his own. If you`re searching for a best friend who will happily join your adventures and then demand a well-earned cuddle afterward, Benson may be the perfect match.

Story
Blue is a big, beautiful boy with all the charm of an American Pit Bull Terrier! Despite his rugged start, this friendly fella is ready to trade his shock collar for some real love. He’s a sturdy, large companion who carries his 63.8 pounds with pride and a whole lot of personality. If you’re looking for a loyal partner who brings big pit energy to every walk, game of fetch, or cozy nap, Blue is your guy. Come meet this handsome, energetic soul and see why his spirit is as bright as his name! This dog is currently being fostered at the Penitentiary of New Mexico through our Fosters in the Pen program, a lifesaving partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department. Foster dogs are placed with trained incarcerated participants to increase shelter capacity while dogs learn basic crate, potty and leash skills and receive daily enrichment and consistent human interaction that helps them show their true personalities outside of the shelter setting. This unique program not only improves a dog’s chances of adoption, but also provides meaningful work, rehabilitation, and learning opportunities for inmates—creating second chances on both sides of the leash.Submit an application to schedule a meet and greet!

Bruno is soon to be `paw-roled` from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with inmate trainers and enrolled in an 8-week training program designed to provide a solid foundation of skills to help them succeed in their new home. These dogs graduate potty trained, crate trained, and with a long list of cues and basic behaviors. Every dog also goes home with a biothane leash and collar, six months of heartworm prevention, is fully up to date on vaccines and medications, and is spayed or neutered.Everyone talks about Bruno… except somehow, nobody is talking about *this* Bruno. This handsome pittie mix is equal parts couch potato, goofball, and sweetheart. At around a year and a half old, Bruno is happiest when he`s lounging beside his people, soaking up affection, and enjoying the comforts of indoor life. Hiking and marathon adventures aren`t really his thing—he`d much rather help you binge-watch your favorite shows from the comfort of the couch.Bruno has spent the last several weeks in the Paws in the Pen program learning good manners, building confidence, and preparing for life with his future family. He`s made great progress with his inmate trainers and is ready to show off everything he`s learned. While Bruno can occasionally be a little mischievous and has been known to take himself on the occasional unauthorized walkabout, his sweet personality and loving nature make him impossible not to adore. He bonds closely with his people and is always happy to be part of whatever you`re doing—as long as it doesn`t involve too much cardio. If you`re looking for a loyal companion with a big heart, a great sense of humor, and expert-level couch lounging skills, Bruno may be your perfect match.
