Story
Augie is a 7-month-old Cane Corso puppy, an intelligent and energetic XL dog. Augie has spent the last month in foster, recovering from a skin condition. He is potty trained, great on leash, and a charming and companionable dog. Augie is friendly with people and dogs. In foster Augie lived happily with two adult dogs (male shepherd, female pit), experienced trails, neighborhoods, and water settings. He shows great potential for training but also comes with some established skills. He is a loving, alert, and attached companion animal. Augie is vocal at times. He is large, energetic, and benefits from a lot of focused interaction. He is not a dog who would thrive at home alone for long hours, particularly not at his current age and stage in development. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Birdie: 110 pounds of emotional support freight train with the soul of a retired grandma and the surprising athletic ability of someone who absolutely should not be that fast. She is currently seeking her forever home with a loving family who appreciates a strong, independent woman in a very large dog body. Bonus points if you have small dogs and/or cats, because Birdie considers herself their extremely committed (and slightly overbearing) security detail. She isn’t a fan of large dogs but hoping training will help with this but a home with a large dog currently isn’t an option. Now let’s talk about the plot twist: despite being 110 lbs and working through a rough past tarsal ligament injury + hip dysplasia, Birdie can and will teleport when motivated. You’ll be thinking “aww sweet slow girl” and then suddenly she’s across the yard like she just heard a chip bag open in another dimension. So yes—low impact lifestyle, but also… stay alert. Her ideal home includes: • Flat terrain (we’re not climbing Everest, thank you) • Minimal stairs (her joints would like a word) • A shallow kiddie pool, where she enjoys standing like a philosophical hippo • A calm household where she can fully relax into her soft, snuggly era but committed to continuing training to open up her world to making new friends Personality-wise, Birdie is deeply loving, loyal, and sweet. Once you’re in her circle, you’re IN. She will lean on you with her entire body weight (this is not optional), follow you around like a very large shadow, and provide unmatched emotional support… while also judging any new human who walks into her home. Birdie will be spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated. Birdie is about 3 years old.

Story
Meet SCARLETT Scarlett was on the euthanasia list and had already been granted three extensions…she had run out of time! She arrived at the shelter after what appears to have been a very hard life. Having had multiple litters, she was emaciated, in pain, and understandably scared. The shelter can be overwhelming for any dog, but especially for one who has never known true safety or comfort. And yet… Scarlett chose kindness. Despite everything she has endured, she is gentle, sweet, and lovable. Her foster family describes her as a happy, affectionate girl who loves playing with the other dogs and absolutely adores her people. She is a total love bug who will roll right over for belly rubs any chance she gets. This darling girl has put on some healthy weight and the pain medications are giving her much needed relief. Scarlett is a beautiful Cane Corso, approximately 4 years old, with so much love to give. As part of her initial care, X-rays revealed some orthopedic abnormalities. We have an appointment coming up with an orthopedic specialist this week, where we can better understand what she needs and create the best plan for her moving forward. She would do best with a family who can offer patience, love, and a commitment to her continued care as we learn more about what she may need. If you would like to be considered for SCARLETT, our adoption process and application is on our website at www.aarflove.org. Please note: We receive many wonderful applications and unfortunately cannot respond to everyone. If we believe you're a potential match, we will reach out directly. Thank you for understanding and for supporting rescue! Part of Scarlett's adoption fee is being sponsored by our Angel Fund for the perfect applicant.
