She is trained and needs an owner who is very experienced with a K9 breed. Experienced owners and handlers only who can keep up with her training and daily exercise requirements. Must understand obedience training and overall dog handling. We'd like her to be outside nearly everyday, ideally a big backyard. Owners who can take her out daily and live a good life. She is very friendly, good around people, does not do well with other dogs. Very high anxiety and skittish. Very loving dog. She resource guards and gets aggressive when defending her food. Do not inquire if you cannot give her the space she needs to eat and be with her belongings She needs to be in the hands of owners who understand Mastiff breeds. They guard, protect, and can be very loving. BUT they have specific requirements and triggers such as resource guarding and barking at the door when they believe theres an intruder.

What can we say about our sweet, handsome Tiki Boy? SO MUCH! We’ve had this dapper 2 year-old Cane Corso/Dane/Bully mix in rescue for about 8 months now and he is barely recognizable from the dog we saved from the euthanasia list. Tiki was dumped at the shelter, and we don’t think he ever knew life outside of a backyard or that humans could be kind before we took him in. When we met Tiki, he avoided eye contact and human touch, wouldn’t hold his head up, and was scared of every little thing (even the wind). While in foster, he’s been exploring the world and gaining confidence each day, and, most importantly, learning what it means to have the safety and love that he deserves. He has truly blossomed and is showing us more and more each day that he is a super silly and affectionate giant puppy dog. Tiki is best friends with his 130-pound mastiff foster sister and would love a home with another doggy friend to play with! He is respectful and kind with his foster cat sibling too! He is gentle and sweet with his six-year old human foster sister as well, and we think he’d do excellently in a home with older kids. This pup is an active boy and a guardian breed who needs an owner who is committed to meeting his exercise needs (he’s a great running/biking partner!), continuing his socialization, and respecting his boundaries. These dogs may be slow to warm up, but they are incredibly loyal and protective of their pack, and the love they give is truly something special once you have it! Tiki is waiting patiently for his forever family at his foster home in Sacramento and he would love to meet you to see if it’s a match.

Meet Rambo, the Anatolian mix! This adolescent goofball is looking for an active family to help provide the daily mental and physical stimulation he craves. Staff observe that he is eager to interact – jumping up and leaning in for pets. He is still perfecting his manners and will thrive with a patient guardian who will help reward good behaviors through positive reinforcement based training. Rambo is a little unsure around new dogs and would prefer to not go to high traffic dog areas (such as dog park or dog beaches) while he is still gaining confidence. A home with a dog savvy dog may be a fit after some initial meet and greets at the Shelter. Rambo`s adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous Good Samaritan!The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
