Story
Hi, I’m Lexi! I’m looking for someone special to give me a home; someone who has a little extra patience and understanding and who will love me while I adapt to a new environment. I didn’t get socialized in my early years and I developed a fear of people other than those I knew to trust. My foster parents and I worked very hard with trainers the first six months I was with SDRO and I am making incredible progress. And I’m happier! I bond quickly with my primary people and am working on welcoming others into my circle. We’ve learned great tips for meeting new people and giving me breaks if I seem overwhelmed. I’m also muzzle trained if unfamiliar people need to get close. If you decide to open your home to me, SDRO will provide some training sessions to help us all settle in comfortably. Aside from that, I am smart, treat-motivated and super attentive. I enjoy learning new things, playing enrichment games and doing food puzzles. But I don’t have to be active all the time. I love a good belly rub and take plenty of naps. Walks and car rides are fun too! My current people often work from home, and I feel more secure when I know where they are. I can spend a half day alone, no problem, and I’ll wait patiently by the door so I can give them a big happy hello when they get home. I haven’t lived with children. I bet I’d like older kids who learn to speak dog language, but younger kids may be too unpredictable for me. We haven’t brought other dogs or cats into our circle, but I’m learning to live with them in my neighborhood. Who knows? In time I might warm up to a few, but I think I’d rather be the only pet in my home, at least for now. I’m making more friends all the time and am looking forward to finding my forever home. We'll want to meet a few times to find out if we're a good fit. I'm ready to try--how about you?

******Please note, once completing the initial screen you will be connected with the placement for a video chat. Transports run every few weeks and we will have the dog on the next available transport once approved. If you are not able to accept a dog until a specific time period, please apply at that time************ We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs. IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply. If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board. We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog. Florence (Flora), 3 years old, spayed female, Carolina Dog mix, 46 pounds. She is in a foster home in HOUSTON, TEXAS and can transport out of State once an adopter is approved. Florence, affectionately nicknamed, Flora, Flory, Lory, or Sweetpea, is a playful and energetic dog who loves to wrestle and be chased. She would do best in a home with dogs of similar size and energy level. When playing, Flora could play for hours. She loves to interact with another dog in the home, Furman by licking his face. Flora has experience playing with dogs ranging from a 35-pound Cocker Spaniel to a 60-pound Pyrenees mix. Flora requires slow and guided introductions to other dogs. She has shown some leash reactivity, exhibiting behaviors like raised hair, whimpering and barking. Her foster parents have worked with her on this behavior. It did take her some time to befriend the resident pup, and Flora may do best as the one and only in the home. Flora’s compatibility with cats is unknown. She adores the 8-year-old child in the home, but is nervous of new children. Flora does have stranger danger when new people come into the home, and tends to bark at them, especially when they move around quickly. Because of her fear, she may prefer an adult household at this time. As mentioned, Flora has some leash reactivity and gets easily spooked, often pulling a lot. However, she has made progress with positive reinforcement and minimal stimuli. She walks much better in calm environments with less activity. She will need consistent training to help her with her leash skills and feeling safe around new dogs and stimuli. Flora is fully housebroken. She has demonstrated some anxiety in the crate at home. When her foster parents have gone out of town she has gone to boarding where she is crated with no issues. At home, she is able to be out of a crate and unsupervised with zero issues. She is fed separately from the other dogs in the home. Otherwise, she shares her toys well and has no issues with people and food, although she needs reminders to take treats gently. Flora has high energy needs and requires dedicated outdoor playtimes to do well inside the home. She thrives in a moderately active home with regular outdoor play sessions. She loves playing with the resident dog, bucking around the yard, eating, going for walks, sunbathing, and birdwatching. She is a total love bug and enjoys snuggling. She does well in the car but is terrified of storms, often seeking shelter in a closet or burying her head in a lap. Flora’s ideal home would be with someone who is often around, enjoys walks or jogs, and will play fetch with her. A home with no other pets or a well balanced dog of similar age, size, and energy level would be ideal. Flora needs an owner who will continue positive reinforcement to help with her anxiety. Flora is very smart, loves learning new tricks, and is very submissive and affectionate. She may be a work in progress, but will reward you with love and companionship for years to come! ***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown. We rarely know a dog's exact age nor are we able to tell the true or full breed mix of dogs as our information is limited most of the time. *** Interested in applying to adopt her? At only seven months old, Sparkle is still a young dog with an entire lifetime ahead of her. She is sweet, loving, and affectionate, and she enjoys the simple things that make dogs happiest—spending time with people, receiving attention, playing, exploring, and feeling like she's part of the family. Sparkle has a warm personality that makes her easy to love. She's at a wonderful age where her personality is beginning to blossom, but she's still young enough for her future family to play an important role in helping her develop into a confident, well-mannered adult. As a Carolina Dog / Terrier Mix, Sparkle may combine the intelligence, loyalty, and athletic nature of the Carolina Dog with the Terrier's curiosity, confidence, and playful spirit. These traits can make for a wonderful companion who enjoys being active but also forms a strong bond with her people. She just needs someone ready to give her the love and stability she deserves. Training, Adjustment & What to Expect At seven months old, Sparkle is entering an important stage of adolescence. Like any rescue dog, Sparkle should be given time to adjust at her own pace. Her loving nature may appear quickly, but developing complete trust and understanding a new routine can take time. Owner Responsibilities & Veterinary Care Sparkle is already spayed and vaccinated, giving her a great start toward a healthy future. Her adopter should continue providing: Routine veterinary wellness examinations Vaccinations and boosters as recommended by a veterinarian Flea, tick, heartworm, and parasite prevention Routine dental care A nutritious diet appropriate for a growing young dog Healthy weight management Daily physical exercise Mental stimulation and enrichment Continued positive reinforcement training Continued socialization Veterinary care whenever illness or injury occurs A safe and comfortable indoor home Because Sparkle is still growing, her nutritional and exercise needs will continue to change as she reaches adulthood. Story
Meet Charro Breed: Carolina Dog / Pit Bull mix Sex: Male Birthday: 7/25/2020 Weight: 55 pounds Health: Healthy and neutered Personality Charro is a friendly, playful, and deeply affectionate boy. He loves attention, playtime, and being around people. He’s got a soft side too — happy to curl up next to you after a game of fetch or a long walk. He’s social, loving, and always eager to connect. Why Charro Would Be a Great Adoption Choice Charro has a big heart and a strong desire to be part of a family. His playful and gentle spirit makes him great for an active home with time for affection and structure. He’s a people-focused dog who thrives on interaction and love. Breed Info The Carolina Dog is known for being intelligent, clean, and pack-oriented. Pit Bulls are loyal, athletic, and affectionate. This mix results in a dog that is both emotionally in-tune and physically active — a smart, loving dog who bonds deeply with his family. Owner Responsibilities Provide consistent playtime, training, and affection Feed a quality diet and maintain regular vet care Offer structure, guidance, and lots of attention Make time for walks, games, and cuddle sessions ❗Things to Consider  Will you allow time for your new dog to adjust to their new environment, routine, and family? Can you afford the financial responsibility of a dog — including food, vet care, preventatives, and grooming? Does your housing allow dogs, and are there any breed or size restrictions? Does anyone in your household have allergies to pets? Do you have the time, energy, and commitment to provide daily care, exercise, and affection for the next 10–15 years? These dogs are not to be chained or left outside. Each one deserves to live indoors with love, safety, and companionship. Commitment for Life Charro needs more than just a place to sleep — he needs someone to love him for life. He’ll be your shadow, your cheerleader, and your cuddle buddy. He’s looking for a forever home, not a temporary stop. Make him part of your life, and he’ll give you all of his.
