Story
Spotlight On Scout  *King Charles Cavalier-Dachshund-Chihuahua Mix* **Background**   Scout is a six-year-old, 12-pound male dog who is a mix of a Chihuahua and a Cavalier Spaniel and who has been waiting a long time for his forever home. Scout is a gentle and sensitive soul with a shy temperament. He likes to be around humans but is not yet open to being petted and prefers to observe from a safe distance. Although he is cautious and reserved, Scout shows a playful side, especially around friendly dogs of a similar size. With patience, love, and time, he may become less timid once he leaves the rescue. Scout will need a quiet, child-free home without a lot of people coming and going. Scout is healthy and up to date on his vaccines. He is fearful of larger dogs. Scout has not been tested with cats. **What Scout Needs**   We rescued Scout five years ago together with his whole family, consisting of his long-haired Chihuahua father and four male siblings. The pups were all rather timid except dad, who was very outgoing and well socialized. They had all come from a situation where 68 dogs were being hoarded, and most of them had never been handled by their owners. One at a time, people adopted four of the dogs, which left Scout and his bonded brother Brad (bonded pairs are extremely difficult to adopt). Over time, Brad became very outgoing, independent, and wanted attention. Scout, while still on the shy side, has slowly made progress since coming to the rescue. He has become more comfortable watching people from a distance, will now occasionally take treats from a trusted volunteer's hand, and is more interested in gentle interaction than when he first arrived. Although he enjoys spending time near friendly dogs the most, these small steps show Scout’s ability to build trust and grow in confidence with patient care. Brad was recently adopted—YAY!—which leaves Scout. There is nothing we would enjoy more than being able to finally find Scout a permanent home with a forever person and one that has a yard, so that he can live out his life there away from the chaos of the rescue ranch and the constant flow of dogs. Scout would be delighted if he could have a small, friendly dog to bond with. He will need adopters who are prepared to let him move at his own pace and who understand that he may never become a lap dog, but are willing to accept Scout for who he is and are happy to give him a lifelong home. He must have a small breed, friendly dog to bond with. Scout enjoys chasing and playing in the yard and also likes to sleep either next to or on top of his friends at night. If you would like to offer Scout a forever home, a dog to bond with, and you have a yard he can enjoy, please visit our website to fill out an application. After we receive your application, our team will reach out to schedule a phone call to learn more about you and your home. We may also arrange a home visit and a meet-and-greet with Scout to help ensure the best fit for everyone. We look forward to hearing from you! **How to Meet and Adopt Scout**   Scout has been switched to a human-grade diet, avoiding kibble in favor of a specifically tailored, healthy canine feeding plan. We have provided him with the best care possible and will continue to support Scout's new owners with guidance on diet and nutrition. To adopt Scout, the $495.00 adoption fee applies. All funds will cover medical expenses and help rescue more dogs.  Please fill out the online application form using the following link.   Please be thorough in your answers and do not leave any blanks. Place an NA in any question that is not applicable to be sure your application is submitted.    www.smallpupsrescue.org August 10, 2026, 7:00 pm
