Story
Sophie joined our family as the third of three small breed dogs. She grew up with our now tween and teen children. She prefers to get all of the attention, however, and wants to be sitting or lying on or with her person always. She likes to play with her toys, but usually only briefly. She likes to chase her tail, play with a piece of food before she eats it, and lie in the sun and under the covers. She can be aggressive if she feels threatened and needs someone who can attune to her and help to calm or reassure her. She’s pretty vocal when she sees other dogs or people she doesn’t know. She’s generally a sweetheart, though, who just wants to be held and loved. She is house and crate trained and sometimes announces she’s gone by wiping her paws. Other times she tries to fake you out by wiping before she’s gone. She doesn’t like walks on a leash but does enjoy being outside, especially in the sun until she gets too hot.

Pulled from a rural shelter, she didn’t know at first that people could be kind. When she arrived at her foster home, she was unsure and fearful—but with patience, gentle care, and time, Lotus has started to trust and show her true self. Like her name, she is slowly but surely blooming. Lotus is good with other dogs, crate trained, and pee pad trained. She finds comfort in the presence of canine companions and would do well in a home that understands she may need a little extra time to feel safe. At this time, Lotus is not a cuddler, but as she continues to build trust, she may grow into enjoying that closeness. She is also not an apartment-type dog. Lotus will need a home where she can move at her own pace and feel secure before being introduced to things like walks and busier environments. Lotus is looking for a patient and understanding family—one willing to let her open up on her own timeline, just as her foster mom has done.
