Story
Some dogs have a way of quietly stealing your heart without even trying, and Brunt is one of those special souls.
Brunt is a small senior Dachshund mix, weighing just under 14 pounds, with a gentle personality, soulful eyes, and a peaceful presence that makes him an absolute joy to be around. He currently lives in our office at BENCHS, where he has proven himself to be a wonderful little office companion!
Brunt is the definition of easygoing. He's quiet, calm, and content to simply be part of whatever is happening around him. He doesn't demand attention or constantly need to be entertained, but when someone offers him affection, he happily soaks up every second. Belly rubs and butt scratches are especially appreciated!
One of Brunt's most endearing qualities is his love of nesting. Give this little gentleman a pile of blankets, and he'll happily arrange them until everything is just right. He is also an incredibly cooperative little guy when it comes to wearing clothing. In fact, we suspect he might actually enjoy getting dressed up! Whether it's a cozy sweater or a cute little outfit, Brunt is always a willing participant.
Brunt has been friendly with everyone he's met and does well around other dogs. He's also quite fascinated by the cats here at the shelter! He enjoys watching them with curiosity, although we haven't determined how he would do actually living with one.
When it comes to house training, Brunt does very well when given regular opportunities to go outside! He is good about letting his people know when he needs a potty break, but it's important to respond promptly, as he can only hold it for so long. Here at the shelter, our overnight schedule means approximately 12 hours between his last evening potty break and his first opportunity to go outside in the morning. That has proven to be a little too long for this senior gentleman, and he occasionally has an accident overnight. We believe Brunt would likely do much better in a home with a more typical overnight routine and more frequent opportunities to go outside. With a consistent schedule and a family who pays attention to his signals, we anticipate he will do quite well!
Brunt enjoys going for walks and does well on a leash, but he must be walked using a harness rather than a collar. He appears to have some sensitivity or possible previous damage around his throat or esophagus, and even light pressure on that area can cause him to cough. A comfortable, properly fitted harness is important for keeping him safe and comfortable.
Although Brunt is a smaller dog, he's a sturdy little fellow with some substance to him! He's not particularly needy, doesn't ask for much, and seems genuinely grateful for life's simple pleasures. A soft blanket, a comfortable place to rest, a little affection, and someone to share his days with are all this sweet boy really needs.
There is something incredibly special about Brunt's eyes. He has this way of looking directly into your soul, as though he has a lifetime of stories to tell. He doesn't need to be the loudest dog in the room or the center of attention to make an impression. His gentle presence speaks for itself.
Brunt would be a wonderful companion for someone looking for a quieter, more relaxed dog who still has plenty of love to give. He deserves a home where he can enjoy his golden years surrounded by comfort, kindness, and people who appreciate the beauty of a senior dog.
