Story
Zeus came to BENCHS through no fault of his own. His previous owner was experiencing housing difficulties and made the difficult decision to surrender him so he could find a stable home. Zeus enjoys just about any kind of treat and isn't particularly picky about flavors. He is housetrained and does a great job letting his people know when he needs to go outside. He understands words like "outside" and "potty" and is reported to be very reliable with his bathroom habits. Zeus sleeps comfortably in a kennel at night, though his previous owner felt he would likely do just fine sharing a bed or relaxing elsewhere in the home. He rides well in the car and enjoys being included in adventures. Like many dogs, Zeus can be a little nervous during thunderstorms or fireworks. He has also been known to reverse sneeze after drinking water, which was reported to be normal for him. At the shelter, Zeus struggled a bit with the transition and stress of a new environment. Because of that, he may alarm bark when meeting new people for the first time. He has very much earned his honorary Chihuahua card and has the classic Chihuahua temperament: devoted to his people, suspicious of strangers until they prove themselves worthy, and never afraid to share his opinions. Once Zeus realizes he is safe and gets to know someone, he forms bonds quickly and deeply. The Zeus who knows you is affectionate, silly, vocal, and full of personality. He enjoys being close to his people and loves attention from those he trusts. He would do best in a quieter home without a lot of commotion, where he can settle in at his own pace and build confidence. While he doesn't seem particularly picky about toys, we have learned a few favorites during his stay at the shelter. Zeus loves sprawling out on big, comfy dog beds and has a soft spot for plush stuffed animals. Few things make him happier than a cozy place to nap and a stuffed toy nearby. He walks fairly well on a leash. He may pull a little at times but overall is an enjoyable walking companion. He has primarily been walked using a collar rather than a harness. He enjoys affection, especially scratches behind his ears and pets down the middle of his back. While he can be a bit sensitive about having his ears handled, his previous owner noted that this improved as he became more comfortable and trusting with people. He is comfortable being picked up by people he knows well. Around the house, Zeus is polite and respectful. He may hop up on the furniture to be near you, but typically waits for an invitation first. Zeus has previously lived successfully with another small female dog. His previous owner reported that he got along well with familiar dogs. For the right person, Zeus is the kind of dog who becomes deeply devoted. He may not be the dog who loves everyone immediately, but once you're in his circle, you'll have a loyal little shadow, a warm lap companion, and a tiny best friend who will happily keep you informed about everything happening in the neighborhood.

Name:  Bella Rae Age:  8 years Gender: Female Breed:  Dachshund / Terrier Mix Weight: 32lbs Dog friendly:  Yes Cat friendly:  Yes Child friendly:  Yes, calm children ages 8+ House trained:  Yes Crate trained:  No, does not use crate, not needed Energy level:  Low Temperament:  Timid, Cautious, Sweet Requirement: Not apartment appropriate Adoption Fee: $275+tax To adopt, go to: www.mendingspirits.org/apply-to-adopt.html From the Foster Family: Bella is an incredibly sweet and gentle 8‑year‑old Dachshund mix who thrives in a calm, steady environment with someone who can give her the companionship she’s used to. She bonds deeply with her person and prefers to spend her days nearby—often lounging on the couch or resting in her bed within sight. Bella adjusts slowly in new places and may need a day or two to feel safe, but once she does, her affectionate, easygoing personality shines. She enjoys other dogs, does wonderfully with cats, and has always been gentle around children, though a quieter home suits her best. Bella loves car rides, walks beautifully on a leash, and would make a wonderful office companion or stay‑at‑home sidekick. She is currently overweight and will benefit from consistent walks, a healthier routine, and someone who can help her transition away from table food. Bella does fine when left alone for short periods, but she is happiest when her person is close and her world feels predictable and secure. From Bella Rae: Hi, I’m Bella Rae. I’m a soft‑hearted girl who loves being near my human and feeling like part of your day. I may hide under a bed or table at first, but once I know I’m safe, I’ll follow you around like your little shadow. I’m not much of a lap dog, but I love being close curled up on the couch or snoozing in my favorite spot while you work or relax. I adore car rides, enjoy gentle play with other dogs, and I’m very proud of how nicely I walk on a leash. I’ve lived with cats and think they make great friends. Loud noises, big changes, and thunderstorms can be scary for me, so I’m hoping for a peaceful home with someone patient and loving. If you’re looking for a loyal, tender‑hearted companion who just wants to be near you and share a calm, cozy life, I would love to be your girl.June 17, 2026, 7:42 pm

Name: Sophie Age: 10 years Gender: Female Breed: Rat Terrier Mix Weight: 33 lbs Dog friendly: Yes, calm respectful dogs Cat friendly: Testing available upon request Child friendly: Yes, older calm gentle school-aged children House trained: Yes Crate trained: Yes Energy level: Moderate Temperament: Sweet, fun, adventurous  Requirement: Not apartment appropriate Adoption Fee: $250+tax To adopt, go to:   www.mendingspirits.org/apply-to-adopt.html From the Foster Family: Sophie is a sweet dog ready to start her next chapter. Sophie wants to be with her people-whether going for a car ride or watching TV, Sophie wants to be close by your side. Sophie loves to go for short walks, taking her time to sniff along the way. When she's not strolling with us through the neighborhood she enjoys snoozing in the sun, but due to light fur and fair skin she reluctantly takes breaks in the shade or allows you to apply dog-safe sunscreen.  She still got her spark because every so often she gets the Zoomies, but after about a minute she's looking for a soft place to rest.  Sophie is incredibly sweet and will be living her best life with people who are mostly home or can take her with them when out and about. A regular routine will not only help her transition quickly, but grow her confidence as your beloved pup. About Me: Hi! I'm Sophie and I'm so excited to meet you--don't let my age fool you! I'm 10 and considered a senior, but I love life and being by your side! I lived with my first owners since I was a puppy but was surrendered due to my humans no longer being able to care for me. I was a little overweight when I first came to my foster family, but with regular walks and a healthy diet, I've slimmed down to a healthy weight. I needed some dental work but that's all taken care of too--I am set! If you're looking for a sweet companion to join you in spending days and nights together then I'm your girl--can't wait to meet you!!!  June 17, 2026, 7:42 pm
