Story
Meet PIPER, a 6 year old 12lb purebred poodle who was surrendered to Just Paws due to her previous owner experiencing financial difficulties. When Piper came to us, she was hospitalized and underwent diagnostic testing. It became clear that she was dealing with ongoing gastrointestinal issues and needed to be on a strict veterinary diet to keep her healthy. We are so happy to share that her health scare now seems to be behind her, and she is flourishing on her new kangaroo kibble, canned food and treats! Now, we have a new challenge, and we are hoping we can find a very special home for this little girl. Piper’s foster family loves her dearly, but due to personal circumstances, they are no longer able to continue fostering her. There is no immediate rush, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they have done for her. Rather than moving Piper to another foster home and putting her through yet another adjustment, we would love to find her a potential forever family with a foster period first, allowing everyone to make sure it is the right fit before making things permanent. Getting to know Piper: Piper is a very scared little dog who needs time, patience and understanding to learn to trust. We believe she has missed out on important years of socialization which may have contributed to the fearful, unsure little dog she is today. Some days are better than others, but for the most part, she prefers to stay in her crate, with the door open, quietly watching the world around her from the place where she feels safest. When Piper does venture out of her crate, she approaches her foster mom very cautiously and slowly. It will likely take a lot of time, patience and consistency for someone to build enough trust with her for her to feel comfortable coming out of her crate on her own. There is hope, and those little moments are what make Piper so special. On her good days, she has climbed onto her foster mom’s lap, wagged her tail and even given her little licks. She also enjoys exploring the condo on her better days and seems to feel a little more confident after eating. She actually wags her tail quite often, giving us little glimpses of the sweet girl hiding beneath all that fear. These moments may seem small, but for Piper, they are huge steps forward. She is showing us that, with time and the right person, she is capable of feeling safe and sharing affection. Piper is currently living in a condo, and we believe she would do much better in a quieter home with a securely fenced yard. Having her own outdoor space to explore at her own pace, without the constant noise and activity of the city, would be ideal for her. She is getting better at walking on a leash, but loud noises still frighten her. When she comes in from a walk, she runs back to her crate, which is her safe place. Piper needs an adult home with patient people who understand that trust takes time. She may never be the most confident dog in the room, and that's okay. We aren't looking for someone to change who Piper is. We are looking for someone who will accept her, love her and give her the security she deserves. In return, she may slowly begin to share those precious little moments of affection that tell you she is learning to trust you. And when a scared little dog finally feels safe enough to sit on your lap, wag her tail or give you a kiss, those moments are truly something special. A little more about Piper: • Pee-pad trained and also does her business outside • Requires regular professional grooming • Needs a quiet, patient adult home • No small children with quick movements, as she can startle easily • MUST remain on her prescribed veterinary diet. This is what is currently working for her, and we cannot risk her having another gastrointestinal setback. Piper deserves a home where she can feel safe, where no one expects too much from her, and where she can take all the time she needs to come out of her shell. Her new family must understand that progress may be slow, and there may be days when she retreats back into her crate. She needs people who will celebrate the little victories and never give up on her. We know her forever family is out there. We just need to find them. Interested in giving Piper the chance she deserves? Please fill out an adoption application. A little warning: our team will be EXTRA picky when it comes to Piper, given everything she has already been through. We will only contact applicants we feel could be a suitable match for her. She has been through enough changes in her little life. This next move needs to be the right one. ************* Interested in this doggo? Please fill out an application which can be found on our website www.justpaws.ca. As our foster family gets to know the dog, their profile can change and will be updated accordingly. Check back often for details! Just Paws is located in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada. We do not adopt out of province or country. Please note that although many of our dogs get along with children, we are not able to adopt to any household with kids under the age of 8 years old. This is a stipulation of our insurance and is not a reflection on suitability of the potential adopter.
