Story
Be sure to read my FULL BIO all the way down to my vetting and how to apply. Not all sites will show the full bio, so if needed please go to www.rockersrescue.org and click on adoptable pets to be sure you are reading all details. The animals have multiple pictures and a video to view. We are located around Shreveport, Louisiana and generally meet at PetSmart Shreveport, or Hollywood Feed Shreveport. SPECIAL NEEDS!!!!!! Do not apply unless you have excellent vet history and financial stability. Read bio thoroughly as this pet requires specific home/needs. Nera Nubs has no back feet! This is a deformity based upon xray. We saved her and her siblings from a local shelter. They had a horrible stomach bug/issue at the time that almost took all of their lives. They sadly lost their brother Nate, but our girls Nera and Nellie survived and got better. We are very fortunate that they pulled through. (Her bio has multiple pictures and a video. Please note her usual getting around is much slower. She's fast when she plays though. Nera gets around just fine, although slower than others. She will often slowly walk about or even balance on her front feet. We have noticed her dragging the rear at times too. She tends to want to avoid the nubs at times as one leg in particular has a sharper bone at the tip. The nubs are different lengths, so that affects her as well. Should prosthetics be used? That's the grand question everyone jumps to. Where we are at, it is best Nera callous her nubs up and figure out how to walk as is. They are healing well and we don't want to mess up a good thing going. She is still growing as well so the idea of prosthetics is an even more difficult one. Plus, she doesn't like her nubs messed with. She is very touchy about them. They need to be monitored at the tips to make sure they are staying nice and clean, no infection or scrapes, etc. We are wanting a callous to form to help protect the little boney ends. Is surgery a possibility to get rid of the sharper bone tips? With our experience in cats with leg defects, and our experience getting Nera's nubs to the healthier point they are now, we want to avoid surgery if possible. That is because if the skin is cut open we will be back to the beginning where infection is very easy with her going to the litterbox and walking, etc. Plus she doesnt like the nubs touched so that would make recovery and keeping them clean after surgery even more difficult. We have come a long way with this girl and her little nubs are doing well and looking good. We do try to provide Nera with lots of cushiony places and soft surfaces to walk on. That means lots of blankets and cuddly things for her nubs. In my experience with kittens with leg defects, you can also expect them to use their front feet to climb your furniture. Nera in no way should ever be front declawed. She really needs her nails up front to be sharp to help her get around. If you are concerned for your couch or furniture, this special needs pet is not for you. Lets talk about litterbox. She uses pine pellet litter. It has a lower chance of sticking to her nubs. You may can get by with a non clumping litter as well, to prevent it sticking to her. We have always had her on pine. We get a 40lb bag for $7 from tractor supply. She uses the litterbox on her own. However, you do need to make sure her nubs stay clean. That leads us into nerve feelings. It seems that Nera's rear end doesn't have as good of nerve feeling as it should. This means she can walk through stuff with her back nubs or tail and not realize it. Example: sitting in water or food. So, he rear end and nubs needs to be watched for cleanliness daily. We are working constantly on getting her use to her nubs being touched and having a positive experience with it. That means petting/ cuddling her and working on petting and handling the nubs briefly to get her use to it. It is important this continues as Nera grows. We cannot guarantee that she will not need surgery at some point in her life. Medical check ups and care are going to be a constant and the future home needs to be able to afford and manage this. Now, with all of this said, Nera's ideal home is someone that is home more often than not. Her ideal home has no dogs or calm ones. She is housed with a dog but does hiss at it when it approaches her. Being special needs can cause some kittens to be more defensive to protect themselves. We want her to feel safe. She will hiss at the other cats at first but then once they leave her alone she is fine. She will also play with them. It's just important any other cat doesn't bully her. She is in a home with a 10 year old child. Any children need to be older, respectful, and gentle with her. Nera's personality: Nera loves to purr when she eats or gets attention. For attention she loves to play with toys or be pet all over (just not the rear legs) Sometimes she will come cuddle by you or on your shoulder/chest. Otherwise, she is usually off walking around doing her own thing. When picked up she does prefer her bottom end supported. She really bonds to her caretaker. Her normal day consists of wandering around, finding places to nap, and playing. She is pretty independent. She does wrestle and play with the other kittens at times too. She is generally quiet but can be loud if she's wanting something. Medical: Has 3 sets of kitten vaccines. Spayed. Negative fecal reading prior to adoption. Fiv/felv test negative. On monthly flea/tick prevention . Many vet visits. When you adopt, you will get a folder with all of their medical records to bring to your vet. Kitten will be microchipped. It is via Petlink and there are NO fees. It is a lifetime registration and our rescue will have already paid for it. Note: We do not approve of declawing. So if you wish to do that, please do not apply. Keep in mind the financial needs for the kittens as they still need more sets of shots as they grow. This kitten is also to be indoors only. If you want an outdoors or indoor/outdoor kitty let us know and we can direct you. Our pets each have multiple pictures and usually at least one video so be sure to check for those. ADOPTION: $80 adoption donation for approved application. Our rescue spends a lot more than this fee on each life, but it is a way to help give back some to go towards the next life we help. We are a 501c3 non profit that is 100% volunteer run. We function solely on donations from kind people. If you wish to donate more or continue following/supporting us over time, we would appreciate your continued love to help our organization save lives. Adoption Process Summary: You apply. We will email or call if we have any questions. Upon app approval, we would schedule a day we all meet at PetSmart Shreveport or Hollywood Feed Shreveport. At that meet we would all make sure that you feel the pet is a good match for your home. If so, we run the adoption. You fill out our contract, pay your donation fee, and receive your folder with their medical records. You must bring a pet carrier to this appointment because your pet will go home with you that day if we all feel it is a great match. Woohoo! We take your adoption picture and you head off with your new furry friend! We can often provide adoption coupons too!
