Meet ONYX Onyx was once just another number on the euthanasia list at Contra Costa Animal Services. A beautiful, gentle soul forced to lie on a cold shelter floor, waiting… not knowing if anyone would come for him. It’s devastating to imagine how a dog this sweet, this loving, was so close to losing his life simply because no one chose him in time. Life has not been kind to Onyx. He didn’t deserve to be abandoned, and he certainly didn’t deserve to be overlooked. Yet despite everything he’s been through, Onyx never lost his gentle heart. He still loves people. He still trusts. He still wants nothing more than to be close to his human and feel safe again. Onyx is about 4 years old and weighs around 45 lbs. We believe he may be a Flat-Coated Retriever mix, possibly even a Newfoundland mix—whatever his breed, he is truly stunning inside and out. He is vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered. He does well with people and can be good with other dogs with proper introductions. What Onyx wants most is simple: a home. A soft place to sleep. Someone who won’t give up on him. Someone who will choose him and never let him feel disposable again. Onyx would make a devoted companion and best friend to the person who opens their heart to him. Prancer COH is an 8 month old neutered male Flat Coated Retriever Mix who came to us as a stray from the City of Hawthorne. This handsome boy enjoys going for walks and exploring the world around him, making him a great companion for an active family. Prancer is friendly and does well with kids, and he’s ready to find a loving home where he can continue to grow, learn, and be someone’s best friend. We hold an event every weekend at our facility on SATURDAY and SUNDAY 11-5pm and open to the public. It is first come first serve we do not evaluate applications prior to an event. If there are multiple interested parties in the same dog or puppy at the same time we would pick the best out of the 10 applications. Please visit our social media platforms for the specifics for each weekend as it changes from week to week. I rescued Chase off the streets of Hattiesburg MS during COVID, so around 2021, and at that time the vet thought he was approximately 9 months of age. After my husband passed 6/18/2025, I had to sell everything and move to CA to live with family. With my health issues, I am unable to exercise Chase as he should be. He is housebroken, loves to be with his people constantly, and just wants to please you. He can be introduced to other dogs, prefers to be the only dog in the home. My desire is to meet the person that would like to adopt Chase, let them build a bond while he stays with me, before releasing him to the new owners, this way he can build trust of the new person/persons, and he will be happy to go with them. He is very smart, and I did a lot of work to get him to where he trusts me in everything. One thing, he is a lab, but someone must have used water as a punishment, so he is very fearful of water. To clean him, I purchased a dog grooming vacuum and he loves being groomed.
