Meet Onyx  Once just a number on a euthanasia list, Onyx was waiting on a cold shelter floor at Contra Costa Animal Services—unsure if anyone would come for him. It’s hard to understand how a dog this gentle, this loving, could have come so close to losing his life simply because he was overlooked. Life hasn’t been kind to Onyx. He didn’t deserve to be abandoned, and he certainly didn’t deserve to feel invisible. And yet… his spirit never broke. Onyx is about 4 years old and weighs around 45 lbs. We believe he may be a Flat-Coated Retriever or Newfoundland mix—whatever his breed, he is absolutely stunning, both inside and out. He’s vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered. Despite everything, Onyx still loves people. He still trusts. He still leans in for affection and just wants to be close to someone who makes him feel safe. He can do well with other dogs when introduced properly, but more than anything, he’s craving a person to call his own. What Onyx wants is simple, but powerful: A home. A soft place to rest. A human who won’t give up on him. He will give his whole heart to the person who chooses him—and he’ll spend every day proving just how much that love means. Story
Toby was put on the euthanasia list because he had "behavior" issues. Truth is, he just couldn't handle shelter life. He was found tied up to a light pole at a gas station, abandoned, then picked up by animal services. He could not handle the stress of life in the shelter and immediately started loosing fur on his hind end. Now that we rescued him and he is with a great foster, his hair is growing back and he is loving his new sister who is a Belgium Malinois.

I was recently rescued from a crowded California shelter, where I was impounded as a stray. I have done well with other dogs and am a happy, playful boy. I weigh 65-70lbs. When Styles first arrived at the shelter, he was so afraid that we were unable to get him to walk on a leash. His handling has improved, and he`s getting out of his kennel now thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers. He still cowers in fear for most of his short walks. While he tolerates touch from humans, he have not seen him seeking out attention from us or looking to people as a source of comfort - though he has not displayed any defensive or aggressive behavior with us!Styles has made huge progress, and he was able to walk to the play yard for the first time to interact with dogs in playgroup! We see so much potential for this little guy, but the level of stress and fear he is living in is heartbreaking despite interventions with anti-anxiety medication and staff and volunteer support. We think that Styles will likely enjoy the company of other dogs once he has a chance to feel more comfortable and decompress in a less stressful space. He`s looking for a foster, adopter, or rescuer to help him build his confidence, walk better on leash, and find his permanent home.Adopters can visit at 600 Aviation Drive, Camarillo or email animal.care@venturacounty.govInterested in fostering Styles?
