Story
Through no fault of his own, this 2-3-year-old black beauty found himself in a scary place - a high kill shelter in Jefferson Parish, in Louisiana. Being black in coloring, the color least adopted, Cheech's life was in danger. We will never know where this sweet boy spent the first years of his life, but it is apparent that he was once someone’s pet, and was even microchipped, but his owner was not to be found. We can't help but wonder… When Cheech was lost, where was his family, and why was there no one frantically searching for their beloved pal? He is the most loving guy you will ever meet, and the most wonderful thing about Cheech is his heart and spirit. Cheech charms everyone he meets and will sit for a treat, shake hands/paws, and roll over for a belly rub. He has a great temperament and has never met a stranger. He will greet you with a look that seems to say, "Hi, I’m Cheech – SO nice to meet you!" This young fellow has an energy level appropriate for a dog his age and will need an adopter who can provide him with adequate exercise, activities, and companionship. In return, Cheech will give you his unconditional love, 24/7, 365! Cheech has spent time with a trainer in the south who has really helped him become the best boy! Just watch this fine fellow show off some of his skills in his video! Cheech is a very expressive boy who truly grins from ear to ear and has a magnificent smile! He is a talker too, vocalizing with various sounds to express his emotions. It's really rather endearing. :-) Cheech who weighs around 56 lbs, is good with other dogs, would enjoy playing with older children, but has no known history with cats. He has been brought up-to-date on vaccinations, is microchipped, neutered, and heartworm negative. Cheech has been given a Proheart-6 injection for 6 months of heartworm prevention. If you have it in your heart to give a gorgeous guy a loving and forever home, please consider Cheech. He will be ready to travel north in mid-January to be adopted. If you would like to be part of Cheech's rescue story and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt Cheech. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun. If not yet approved for adoption, please visit our website to learn more and to submit an online application. Click here to visit our website. Please contact us with any questions regarding your application status. PLEASE APPLY by submitting an application via this online link: Click for Adoption Application About Our Rescue Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready. The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home. ADOPTION FEES - Effective of October 1, 2024 PUREBRED DOGS Purebred puppies, up to 6 months $1000 Purebred dogs, 6 months - 6 years $800 Purebred dogs, 7 - 9 years $650 Purebred dogs, 10 years and up $550 Young dogs with special needs $650 Senior dogs with special needs $500 Pairs of Purebred Puppies, up to 6 months $1600 Bonded pair - young purebred dogs $1400 Bonded pair - senior dogs 7 years & up $1000 MIXED BREED DOGS Up to 6 months $850 6 months - 6 years $750 7 - 9 years $650 10 years and up $550 Young dogs with special needs $650 Senior dogs with special needs $500 Bonded pair - young dogs $1000 Bonded pair - senior dogs 7 years & up $900 A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided. Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed. Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog. Story
Hi there! My name is Stan, and I’m a sweet Black Lab mix weighing in at 55 lbs with the silly Lab energy and stance. I’ve been hanging out at the shelter in Mississippi for the past three years until I was brought up north, now waiting for my forever home. But don’t let that fool you—I’ve got the warmest, golden brown eyes and a heart full of kindness. I’d been sharing a kennel with my best bud, Happy, and we’ve become quite the duo but Happy was recently adopted and I’m here alone.  The folks at the shelter and previous fosters say I’m a very good boy, and I absolutely LOVE people. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to get some special attention when someone takes me out to play. I’m affectionate and ready to shower you with love.  I’ve got great energy and am always up for some fun, but a lower stimulation home would be best. I can be a little jumpy and exuberant (more so than Happy for sure) as we've never really lived in a home before. Some training might do me some good, along with a patient family willing to give me a chance in a home and a real life filled with love. A quiet home with older kids would probably be best, as I'm big and strong, not always knowing my own strength. I absolutely LOVE all toys.  My happy place is with a chew toy which will keep me busy for a long time! If you’re looking for a loyal gentle spirit, I am your guys Ready to add some love to your life? Story
Meet Nico! This handsome 3-year-old Lab mix weighs about 40 pounds, is fully vetted, and ready to find his forever family! He’s the perfect medium size—big enough for adventures but small enough to snuggle. Nico has that classic Lab sweetness and charm, always eager for affection and companionship. Whether it’s going for a walk, playing outside, or relaxing by your side, Nico will be your loyal buddy through it all. Nico would do best in a home with a friendly resident dog who can help him learn the ropes and build his confidence. He also enjoys having the TV or radio on, which helps him feel more comfortable and relaxed. Nico is not a fan of being crated, so a home that can offer him a more open, cozy environment will help him thrive. With a little patience and time to settle in, Nico will be a wonderful addition to your family. Story
Alexa is a 4-year-old, 65-pound black Lab/Weimaraner mix with a loving heart and a joyful spirit. She’s gentle, affectionate, and wonderful with children and other dogs. Whether she’s greeting new friends or relaxing with her people, Alexa’s sweet nature always shines through. She’s an energetic girl who loves to play, especially if you have a ball to toss her way. During playtime with other dogs, she can get a bit rambunctious, but she responds well to verbal correction and quickly settles down. Alexa does pull on the leash, so she’ll benefit from some training to help her master polite walking skills. With a little guidance, she’ll make fantastic strides. If you’re looking for a loyal, playful companion who brings warmth and enthusiasm to every moment, Alexa is ready to join your family.
