Story
I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you! Through no fault of his own, this 2-3-year-old black beauty found himself in a scary place - a high kill shelter in Jefferson Parish, in Louisiana. Being black in coloring, the color least adopted, Cheech's life was in danger. We will never know where this sweet boy spent the first years of his life, but it is apparent that he was once someone’s pet, and was even microchipped, but his owner was not to be found. We can't help but wonder… When Cheech was lost, where was his family, and why was there no one frantically searching for their beloved pal? He is the most loving guy you will ever meet, and the most wonderful thing about Cheech is his heart and spirit. Cheech charms everyone he meets and will sit for a treat, shake hands/paws, and roll over for a belly rub. He has a great temperament and has never met a stranger. He will greet you with a look that seems to say, "Hi, I’m Cheech – SO nice to meet you!" This young fellow has an energy level appropriate for a dog his age and will need an adopter who can provide him with adequate exercise, activities, and companionship. In return, Cheech will give you his unconditional love, 24/7, 365! Cheech has spent time with a trainer in the south who has really helped him become the best boy, and Cheech is now CGC certified!! (See details below.) Cheech is a very expressive boy who truly grins from ear to ear and has a magnificent smile! He is a talker too, vocalizing with various sounds to express his emotions. It's really rather endearing. :-) Take a look at his video to see Cheech in action! Cheech who weighs around 71 lbs, is good with other dogs, would enjoy playing with older children, but has no known history with cats. He has been brought up-to-date on vaccinations, is micro-chipped, neutered, and heartworm negative. Cheech has been given a Proheart-6 injection for 6 months of heartworm prevention. If you have it in your heart to give a gorgeous guy a loving and forever home, please consider Cheech. He will be ready to travel north in mid-January to be adopted. If you would like to be part of Cheech's rescue story and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt Cheech. What is a Canine Good Citizen? Canine Good Citizen is a training program through the American Kennel Club. It’s a test made up of 10 skills that teach good manners for dogs and responsible pet ownership for humans. The skills to pass on the test are practical, functional behaviors every dog can learn, and any dog can participate. The 10 Canine Good Citizen requirements: Accepting a friendly stranger Sitting politely for petting Appearance and grooming Walking on a loose leash Walking through a crowd Sitting or laying down on cue and staying in place Coming when called Reaction to another dog Reaction to distraction Supervised separation Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun. If not yet approved for adoption, please visit our website to learn more and to submit an online application. Click here to visit our website. Please contact us with any questions regarding your application status. PLEASE APPLY by submitting an application via this online link: Click for Adoption Application About Our Rescue Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready. The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided. Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed. Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog. Story
Meet Blue – A Sweet Boy Ready for His Forever Family! Blue is a 2-year-old pup with an enormous heart! He came to us as a 7-month-old puppy who was very under-socialized and understandably fearful due to his past experiences. Despite what he has been through, Blue is incredibly affectionate, and with the right family, he will become the loyal and loving companion you’ve been searching for. Blue has been diagnosed with canine paroxysmal dyskinesia, but this condition does not hold him back. His movement disorder is effectively managed with a low-stress environment and medication. Having spent the last two months in a foster home, Blue has made significant progress with housebreaking and crate training. He’s a playful goofball who enjoys galloping around the yard, but he’s also a sweetheart who loves to snuggle up and watch TV with you. Blue can be nervous around new people, so he needs an experienced owner who is patient and has the time and resources to help him continue to develop. He enjoys playing with other dogs and is currently being fostered alongside his sister, Nala, who is also available for adoption. What Blue Needs: • A fenced in yard • A patient family ready to help him overcome his fears and become the confident dog we know he can be • Consistent training and positive reinforcement to support his growth • A calm, understanding environment where he feels safe and loved. ( A home with kids 16 and older ) If you’re prepared to provide Blue with the loving, patient home he deserves, please submit an application at AlmostHomeLI.org. He is truly worth it!
