Rocky is a handsome, intelligent boy looking for a special home with an experienced and dedicated owner who can see past his challenges and appreciate the wonderful companion he can be. Rocky would do best in an adult-only home and would prefer to be the only pet, where he can have the space and stability he needs to thrive. He struggles with strangers and has a history of resource guarding behaviors, so he will need a patient, understanding adopter who is willing to continue working with him on his training and help him build confidence. Picked up as a stray in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, this 2-year-old Retriever/Shepherd mix is ready to find his forever home. Argiro is now in a foster home in New England and has stolen the heart of his foster mom. She told us, "Argiro is a sweet, affectionate pup who loves being with people and has quickly earned the nickname "my shadow" because he wants to be wherever I am - even checking out the shower once I was done! Argiro is learning what it means to be safe, loved, and part of a family. Every day he grows more relaxed and confident. While he can still be a bit rambunctious, he's settling down beautifully and has gone from only relaxing for a few minutes at a time to happily lounging for nearly an hour. He's a quick learner who is eager to please and already knows "sit" and "shake." We have found out Argiro has wonderful house manners. He sleeps through the night with his foster family, is quiet around the house, and rarely barks. He does well when left home alone for short periods. He enjoys walks and would love a home with a securely fenced yard where his long legs can really stretch out. His favorite toy? Anything that squeaks! Like many dogs who have experienced food insecurity, Argiro is very enthusiastic about meals and treats. Because he likely never knew where his next meal would come from, he tends to eat quickly and can be a little overexcited when taking treats. His foster mom has already begun teaching him the cue "gentle," and he's catching on incredibly fast. He'll need an adopter who will continue this training with patience, positive guidance, and consistency. Due to his overwhelming popularity, we are no longer taking applications for Oakley and hope you will consider another deserving SGRR dog. In all the ways that count, Oakley is a normal, healthy, happy one-year-old Golden Retriever! Beyond all of his Golden goodness, Oakley was born extra special. With his vision impairment, our plan was for Oakley to have surgery to remove congenital bilateral cataracts, but the surgeon saw that in addition to the cataracts, Oakley's retinas are bilaterally detached as well. In a nutshell, the specialist suggested that we save the rescue's financial resources because he did not feel Oakley's sight would be restored. However, Oakley can live a normal and happy life as the special creature God created him to be. Oakley weighs about 60 lbs, and could likely use a few more pounds on his fuzzy-wuzzy frame. He is good with dogs, indifferent to cats, and would be fine with older children who are respectful of his needs. He is very sweet and somewhat shy when first meeting new friends but as he gets to know his humans, he becomes more and more affectionate. He knows a few basic commands like "sit" and "paw" and keeps his kennel clean which is a good sign he is house-broken. Oakley has a moderate energy level but does enjoy a little jaunt around the play yard on a leash. He rides well in the car with a little help getting in and out, and settles down nicely for the ride. Oakley walks nicely on the leash and also goes potty on the leash without hesitation. Oakley is a quiet fellow, doesn't bark too much, and is gentle and patient. He's always wagging his tail and looking for belly rubs! In speaking with one of our adopters of a blind Golden, she shared how her dog would "map out" the rooms in her home when he first arrived, committing the details and placements of objects to memory. She noticed that her Memphis also did this when visiting others homes and people would say to her, "your dog can't possibly be blind!" But he was and he lived a full and charmed life!
