Story
Meet Sky Blue, the brown and white puppy. Sky Blue arrived to the Shelter with his 7 littermates as strays. They were found in a rural part of South County by some apple orchards by a good Samaritan. After being brought to safety, some pups went to foster care until they were of age for adoption. Sky Blue and his three siblings have been getting TLC and care by staff and volunteers. Typical to pups their age, they are still perfecting life skills and manners like potty training and age appropriate socialization. Sky Blue will thrive in a home that have the ability to provide the above average care that puppies need through mental and physical stimulation as well as positive reinforcement based training. Sky Blue may do well in a home with other animals provided there is a slow, thoughtful introduction. We encourage any resident dogs to meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Due to some observed resource guarding in a previous home, Sky Blue is not recommended to go to a home with young children. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Evie, the German Short Haired Pointer. We don’t know too much about her life before the Shelter. She came to us after her owner passed away. She is described as sweet and well behaved by a previous guardian. She is house trained, affectionate and enjoys toys. Any resident dogs in the home should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Evie in a home with cats or children. Evie recently went on a sleepover at a volunteer`s house. They report: `I have nothing but good things to say about Evie. She jumped in the car easily and laid down calmly for our ride home. She is easy to walk on leash, definitely enthusiastic, but does not pull. She has an impressive amount of energy for her senior age and I hope potential adopters are not scared away by her age. While she is ready for a long walk, she is just as happy snuggling on the couch. Evie is affectionate and would ideally like to be a lap dog, but is also happy cozy on her own if that`s the vibe. She is definitely potty trained and knows some basic commands. She did not react when dogs passed by us or sniffed her. She seemed interested in the dogs sniffing, but was easily redirected.` The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption.
