Story
Sammy is a sweet, sensitive "Velcro" boy who is looking for a soft place to land and an adopter who can shower him with the undivided attention he craves and deserves. When Sammy’s previous owner passed away unexpectedly, he found himself in a South Texas shelter. Imagine how confusing that must have been for him after living his life as an inside dog. Sammy is a senior English Setter with a wonderful zest for life. While the shelter listed him as 10 years old, a contact from his past said that he is 13. Regardless of the number, his foster parent's veterinarian notes that he acts, feels, and moves like a youthful 10-year-old pup. Sammy absolutely loves his daily walks, promises to be an incredibly loyal companion, and is ready to take on new adventures by your side. Sammy is the ultimate shadow who wants love, all the time, and prefers to be right by your side or cuddling on the furniture with you. He is also a "silent" companion because he “speaks” but doesn't bark. SWESR’s DVM believes his vocal cords were cut in the past, but Sammy still finds adorable ways to vocalize and communicate his happiness to his humans. Sammy is very quick to train, his foster Dad says “Sammy is probably the quickest Setter we've ever had to learn new things. He's a real people pleaser. He wants to make you happy. He is goodness, this sweet boy has captured our hearts.” Sammy is a quick, treat-motivated learner. He has the playful spirit of a younger dog when it comes to treats. He loves Greenies, pig ears, and chew toys of all kinds. If you are wondering why Sammy’s foster parents aren’t adopting him, it is because they have a senior timid ES that is blind and she won’t compete for attention. We all think both dogs will be happiest where Sammy can be your number one cuddler and resident dog Belle can get plenty of unobstructed snuggle time with Mom and Dad. Sammy’s life before rescue included romps on the beach and he absolutely loves "going!" He is fantastic on a leash, walks beautifully in a harness without pulling, and looks forward to several 15-20 minute strolls a day. Because he gets so caught up in sniffing and exploring, he forgets to self-regulate in the Texas heat when he is off-leash in the yard. He will need a family who keeps a close eye on him during outdoor time so he doesn't overexert himself. He does have a typical Setter prey drive for squirrels, birds and lizards. Sammy currently lives with two cats and, after some consistent reminders that they are "good kitties," he now peacefully coexists and sniffs them politely. Because Sammy loves affection so much, he can be a bit jealous when sharing attention with other pets. He would thrive as an only dog or with a very laid-back, independent canine sibling who doesn't mind him stealing the spotlight. Sammy is house-trained but is likely used to having on-demand outdoor access from a past doggy door. If his humans delay when he stands by the door, he can have minor leaks, so his fosters currently use a belly band as a backup. He just needs a patient owner who can continue helping him learn to "ask" for the door instead of just running to it. Sammy is looking for a home without long flights of stairs to get to his bed, couch or his yard. Sammy does have cloudy eyes that are age related and likely some age related hearing loss (or is it selective Setter hearing ~ hard to tell with our breed sometimes). Sammy is neutered and up to date on vaccines and tests. He is in a foster home near Houston TX.
