Story
Meet CJ, a Great Dane who is the ultimate definition of a "Gentle Giant." He was likely born around late 2024. CJ arrived in our care extremely underweight and suffering from injuries to his legs. Despite the pain he must have been in, his sweetness never wavered. He allowed the vet and our team to provide all necessary medical treatment without a single complaint, proving himself to be an incredibly patient and sweet-natured pup who simply loves being around people. Because of his history as a stray, CJ is currently a bit of a blank slate. He recently met a young child (around 8 years old) and did very well. While we know he adores humans, we haven't yet tested him with other dogs, and his level of formal training is unknown. He will need a dedicated owner who can provide him with the structure, soft bedding, and high-quality nutrition a growing Great Dane requires. He was neutered on 3/17 so is ready to go to his forever home. If you have room in your heart (and on your sofa) for this big, lovable boy, his adoption fee is $350. Story
MEET TIKI! What can we say about our sweet, handsome Tiki Boy? SO MUCH! Tiki is a 3-year-old Cane Corso/Great Dane/Bully mix who has come an incredible way since joining the rescue. When we first met him, Tiki had been dumped at the shelter and seemed to have very little experience with the world or with humans being kind to him. He avoided eye contact and touch, kept his head down, and was frightened by just about everything (even the wind!). That dog is almost unrecognizable today, but some of what makes Tiki Tiki is still very much there. Once he feels safe, Tiki is an incredibly sweet, goofy guy. He gives kisses now, follows his foster mom around the house, greets his people with a full-body waggle butt, and has developed a hilarious talking/howling noise when he would like your attention, thank you very much. He loves being near his people without needing to be on top of them all the time, making him a wonderful mix of affectionate and independent. Tiki is a medium-energy dog with a great off switch. He’s perfectly content hanging out and relaxing at home, but bring out a ball and he’s ready to PLAY. He’s also very well trained: he knows his commands, has excellent crate skills, and understands the routines and expectations of living in a home. Tiki is still a sensitive dog, though, and his adopter should understand that his confidence at home doesn’t mean he’s fearless. New things can be a big deal in Tiki World. Changes in his environment sometimes take him a while to investigate and decide are safe. He’s also a true guardian: he notices what’s happening around his home and will absolutely let you know when he hears a sound he doesn’t recognize. That’s part of who he is, not a behavior we expect to disappear with time. Out in the world, Tiki can still be fearful around unfamiliar dogs, so he’ll need a confident handler who can continue working with him and won’t put him in situations that overwhelm him. At home, however, we know he can form wonderful relationships with other animals. He’s best friends with his 130-pound mastiff foster sister and is respectful and kind with his foster cat sibling. He’s also gentle and sweet with his human foster sister and could do well with respectful older kids. Tiki isn’t the dog for someone looking for a carefree social butterfly who wants to greet every dog and investigate every new thing. He’s a homebody with a guardian’s heart. He thrives with routine, people he trusts, clear expectations, and a home where he feels secure. His family will need to respect his boundaries and give him time to process unfamiliar things rather than pushing him through them. And in return? You get the version of Tiki we’ve been lucky enough to watch emerge: a loyal, well-mannered, ball-loving, kiss-giving, weird-noise-making waggle butt who finally knows that people can be safe. Tiki is waiting for his forever family at his foster home in Sacramento and would love to meet you to see if it’s a match. https://www.cabullyrescue.org/apply-here
