Story
Blue is a big and sweet boy. He likes to lean against his humans asking gently for head scratches and pets. Blue is new at Helping Strays and the staff is still learning about him. Come back soon for more information.Blue is four years old and weighs 95 pounds. The adoption fee for adult dogs, seven months and older, is $250. All pets are microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and will be altered prior to adoption. If you are interested in meeting Blue, stop by the shelter during open hours or complete an adoption application on our website. If you have an existing dog at home, we recommend bringing it along to meet Blue.helpingstrays.orgBlue has heartworms and will be starting treatment soon. He would greatly benefit from having a calm home to recuperate in rather than trying to rest in a noisy and stressful shelter environment. If you would like to provide a foster home during Blue's heartworm treatment, Helping Strays will provide everything you need; the medical care, crate, food, etc. Blue can still be adopted but will need to come back to the shelter periodically to complete his treatment which is covered in the adoption fee.

Story
Atlas is one of the unsocialized puppies found with a group of Pyrenees off the side of a highway near Springfield, MO. A neighbor reported he had been hit by a truck prior to rescue being able to catch him, but thankfully X-rays showed no broken bones, just a soft tissue injury which he has recovered from. Atlas isn't quite ready to be adopted, however thanks to his foster family he has made LOTS of progress in just a short time. Atlas took a little time to get comfortable but he now loves people, adults and kids alike, and enjoys the companionship of other dogs. Atlas is a friendly boy and his favorite activity at the moment is being brushed. He's learning to walk with a leash and harness and walks well when he follows along with the other dogs in his foster home. He is doing pretty well with potty training, but needs frequent reminders that it's time to go outside or an accident may occur. But he is learning! Atlas loves being petted, however he is not a fan of being picked up or sitting in your lap yet. He doesn't get up on the furniture and would rather you sit with him on the floor. Atlas is definitely in the puppy mouthing stage and loves to mouth on your hand/arm and play with soft toys. Being fostered in Ankeny, IA Atlas will be up to date on core vaccines, microchipped, and up to date on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. He will be adopted on a spay/neuter contract with adopter promising to spay/neuter at a later date and must show proof at that time. Adoption Requirements: A secure & visible fence A home visit A vet check with at least a two year vet history Adopters can be located in Missouri and surrounding states: Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois. We are able to help transport to those states.

Story
Kody was surrendered to rescue in 2020 because he and the other male dog in the home were not getting along. Kody is one of our six sanctuary dogs. He has been with us for such a long time now that we feel he would not do well transitioning to a new home. So we will continue to love and care for Kody in rescue. We appreciate donations towards his food/treats, monthly preventatives, and routine vet care. Hi my name is Kody. I am a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. I am a lovable boy who gives the Pyr paw. Very affectionate to my foster dad, I give him daily hugs when I'm sitting on top of my dog house. It's my favorite place to be to observe my surroundings. Walks are another favorite activity and I must carry my stuffed lamb with me. I also enjoy belly rubs, car rides, and boat rides. I'm food motivated and know sit, lay down, shake and hug but in typical Pyrenees fashion I only listen when I want to! I am neutered, up to date on vaccinations, up to date on flea/tick preventives, Our Adoption Requirements: A secure and visible fence. In order for your application to be approved you must pass a home check and a vet check which includes having at least a two year vet history. Our adoptable dogs can be adopted in Missouri and surrounding states: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Arkansas. We are able to transport me to those states.

Story
Leo is one of our six sanctuary dogs. We rescued him in July 2020. Leo has been with us for such a long time that we feel he would not do well transitioning to a new home. So we will continue to love and care for Leo in rescue. We appreciate donations towards his food/treats, monthly preventatives, and routine vet care. My name is Leo. Don't you just love my beautiful golden mane and my amber eyes? I came into rescue after a Kansas Humane Society adopted me out twice but I was returned both times. My adopters didn't pay enough attention to me so I kept escaping my yard and went looking for friends. I'm a pretty chill guy and like being petted, but I'm not in your face about it. If you scratch my neck I will close my eyes and lean on you. I am very gentle with my Pyr Paw. Sometimes I even put up two paws and I almost fall over backwards in the process! I LOVE being outside observing my surroundings and am happy in a rural setting with a large yard to watch over. I'm house trained, like to go for walks, and like to play in the water. I am treat motivated and will sit for treats. My foster dad says I'm dog friendly but also like getting all the attention when other dogs aren't around. I was introduced to cats at the vets office and I paid them no mind. I am microchipped, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and up to date on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Our Adoption Requirements: A secure and visible fence. In order for your application to be approved, you must pass a home check and a vet check which includes having at least a two year vet history. Story
Zita is the last remaining puppy available for adoption from our Marley's Miracles litter of ten. Mama Marley was a Great Pyrenees who passed away from sepsis when the pups were just a couple of days old. We think the father is an Anatolian Shepherd mix. Zita is an energetic girl. She gets the zoomies all the time and we love to watch her long legs run! At Zita's height, she can easily snatch things off of a table and does. However she hasn't taken to stealing things off the kitchen counter yet. Besides playing with the dogs in her foster home, one of Zita's favorite activities is chewing on a multitude of toys. She loves to tear apart stuffed animals, but doesn't eat the stuffing. Shy and reserved when meeting people, Zita has lots of personality in her foster home. A talker, Zita will let her foster mom know how she feels. Zita is treat motivated, potty trained, and does pretty well on a leash. Zita knows sit and goes in her kennel when you say round up. We have been monitoring Zita's bloodwork regularly as three of her littermates passed from kidney failure. Zita's bloodwork was slightly elevated in the spring, however since then her results were really good so our vet has cleared her to be adopted. Zita is still on a low protein diet. Zita will come to her adopter spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and up to date on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Adoption Requirements: A secure, visible fence. Applicants must pass a home check and a vet check which includes having at least a two year, excellent vet history. Adopters can be located in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, and Arkansas.

Story
Zara and her five puppies were left behind on a farm when their owners moved away. A Good Samaritan rescued them from being left behind. Zara is a 1-2 year old sweetheart. She takes a while to warm up to someone but when she does she just wants your love. She is pretty food motivated and knows how to sit very well. We are working on shake and walking properly on a leash. Zara is not a big chewer but she loves interactive puzzle toys. Zara would do really well with an owner who is home more often than not. She would love a fenced in back yard so she can patrol and explore as she is still young and playful. Zara is house trained and alerts when she has to go outside to potty. She is still underweight from having had puppies. Zara is being fostered in Springfield, MO. Zara will be up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and up to date on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Zara still needs to be spayed. Adoption Requirements: A secure & visible fence A home visit A vet check with at least a two year vet history Adopters can be located in Missouri and surrounding states: Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois. We are able to help transport to those states.
