Story
Gretel – Ready for Her Fresh StartGretel is an approximately 3.5-year-old Great Pyrenees mix who has been patiently waiting for her turn. She joined FMAR in August after a challenging chapter in her life and has spent the last several months showing us just how resilient, happy, and loving she truly is. Now, she’s finally ready for a home of her own. This big-hearted girl is incredibly friendly and always happy to see her people. True to her Pyrenees roots, Gretel is slightly obsessed with being outside and loves having space to explore and relax. She does well on her own or alongside her “brother” Hansel (not biologically related), and would be happy as a solo dog or with the right canine companion.Gretel does wonderfully in her kennel—she keeps it clean, follows a solid routine, and settles in nicely. She enjoys soft, stuffy toys and hard bones inside, but outdoors she’s more focused on her surroundings than toys. She has a strong, confident bark that lets you know when something new has entered her space, making her an excellent alert dog.Gretel’s ideal home would offer a very large outdoor area where she can spend much of her day enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells around her. She is not your typical “fetch-and-frisbee” dog, but she would still do well with a family who understands and appreciates her independent, guardian-style personality. Gretel is happiest when she’s able to exist alongside her people rather than constantly entertain them—and in the right home, she will be a loyal, steady presence and a truly special companion.A favorite among staff and volunteers, Gretel is ready to trade kennel life for wide-open space, comfort, and a family who loves her just the way she is.If you would like to meet Gretel, please submit an application for her on our website https://www.friendsofmichigan.org/adoptable-dogs. She is spayed, up to date on all age appropriate vaccines, heartworm negative, microchipped, and on monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Her adoption fee is $250, which covers part of the medical care she will receive.**Please note that the breed listed for each of our dogs is a rough estimate unless DNA results are provided in their Bio. All strays have rough estimates of their age based on the condition of their teeth. Each dog is different, so each adoption is different. Story
Hansel – The Big, Derpy SweetheartHansel is an approximately 5-year-old Great Pyrenees mix who has blossomed since arriving at FMAR in August. Like Gretel, he came from a tough start, but since being in care, Hansel has grown into a lovable, silly, and devoted companion. While he looks a bit more like a classic Pyrenees than Gretel, Hansel is far less of the typical guardian breed. He’s delightfully derpy—often running and barking at the wind or a falling leaf—then plopping down to rest his giant head in your lap for some serious snuggles.Hansel walks beautifully on leash and adores Gretel, his “not bio sister.” He would do well in many types of homes, from active families to quiet ones, as long as he has space to roam. He tends to get nervous around new people or animals at first but once you’re in his inner circle, you’re family for life.He keeps his kennel neat and isn’t interested in toys, but he LOVES being outside—ideally in a large yard where he can explore, sniff, flop, and roll around to his heart’s content.Hansel is a gentle giant who’s ready to find a family who will cherish his goofy, loyal spirit. If you would like to meet Hansel, please submit an application for him on our website https://www.friendsofmichigan.org/adoptable-dogs. He is neutered, up to date on all age appropriate vaccines, heartworm negative, microchipped, and on monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. His adoption fee is $250, which helps cover the cost of the medical care he has received.**Please note that the breed listed for each of our dogs is a rough estimate unless DNA results are provided in their Bio. All strays have rough estimates of their age based on the condition of their teeth. Each dog is different, so each adoption is different. Our adoption process might require multiple visits to the shelter before our dogs can go home. Or they may be ready on the first visit. It really depends on the individual dog and the potential adopters. Once we receive your application, the Dog Staff will contact you to discuss meeting our dogs.

Story
Charlie and his siblings Dennis, Dee, and Mac have an always sunny disposition. They are spunky, happy friendly and curious. Their favorite past time is hanging out by one of the ponds. They don't quite swim yet but definitely love water. Great with dogs of all sizes and with cats. Love to cuddle. Do not love being a crate though. They will each make perfect family dogs or adventure buddies for a single person or couple. They are some of the best puppies I've ever met. They were surrendered to a small rural shelter as an accidental litter. He is currently still in Oklahoma where he was rescued but he can only be adopted out of state where people treat animals well. He has to be prepaid and picked up directly from transport at one of our transport drop off locations below. If things don't work out for some reason, which rarely ever happens, we will either find a local foster to take him in or he will go back to Oklahoma on our next transport until a new home is found. Note: No dogs are advertised as potty-trained because most dogs need at least some re-training in a new environment and after being in a shelter/rescue environment/strays. www.facebook.com/desideratarescue (copy and paste into a new browser window) Transport locations: - Washington State (Kennewick, Spokane, Tumwater, Tacoma, Tukwila, Lynnwood/Edmonds, Bellingham) - Oregon (Portland and Springfield) - Colorado (Ft Lupton) - Idaho (Heyburn and Boise/Meridian) - Utah (Ogden) - Wyoming (Evanston, Rock Springs, Laramie) - Montana (Missoula) - Illinois (Vandalia, Springfield, Chicago) - Indiana (Spiceland, Burn Harbor) - Michigan (St Joseph, Battle Creek, Ann Arbor) - Wisconsin (Madison, Wausau, Eau Claire, Appleton, Milwaukee) - Minnesota (Minneapolis/St Paul) - Iowa (Des Moines) - Ohio (Columbus and London) - Pennsylvania (Erie, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg) - New York (Buffalo and Albany) - Connecticut (Enfield) - New Jersey (Bedminster) - Nevada (Las Vegas) - Arizona (Flagstaff) Vetting: lifetime free microchip, rabies vaccine, bordetella vaccine, dhpp vaccine x 3, lepto vaccine x 2, dewormed several times, on monthly flea and tick prevention, on monthly heartworm protection, too young/small for neuter and heartworm test. Story
Mac and his siblings found themselves at a small rural shelter with no foot traffic so we got them out. Mac is curious and independent and loving and adventurous. He loves water and he spends most of his day exploring the woods and ponds on the property. He is super smart too. His siblings are all fluffier than he is and look more shepherd like than he does. He has more of a heeler look in terms of coloring and shape but based on their sizes and their growth since I got them, I believe they will be big dogs. Big, happy, friendly, loving dogs. He is about 4 months old. He is currently still in Oklahoma where he was rescued but he can only be adopted out of state where people treat animals well. He has to be prepaid and picked up directly from transport at one of our transport drop off locations below.
