Story
After spending nearly a year at Shelter Hope without a single inquiry, Simmba is finally getting a chance to shine in a foster home — and he’s proving to be smart, playful, and full of love.
Simmba is a 3-year-old Poodle mix who was surrendered the day after Christmas in 2024. Before that, he lived mostly outdoors and received less attention as his family’s children grew older. Despite this, Simmba has a huge heart and blossoms with patience, consistency, and kindness.
He’s fully potty trained, food-motivated, and already knows the “sit” command. He loves fetch, squeaky toys, and zooming or rolling through the grass, as well as soaking up the sun on his favorite bench. Indoors, he keeps his lamby toy close, happily offers enthusiastic face kisses, and adores cuddles, belly rubs, and simply being near his people. He also respects boundaries and will retreat to his bed or “sanctuary” when asked.
At his foster home, Simmba has done well with friendly men and women and is learning that the world can be a safe and positive place. He does best in a calm, low-chaos environment, as see him grow more confident and relaxed. Foster is actively socializing him with new people and other dogs, and he’s making excellent progress.
Simmba can be protective and sometimes needs help navigating his big feelings — which is why he’s often called a “project dog” — but he bonds deeply and is incredibly loyal once trust is built. He does have some skin allergies, possibly food-related, and currently wears a cone to prevent licking, though it doesn’t slow down his playful, quirky personality.
With his fun-loving nature, Simmba could do well with another small, friendly, playful female dog as a companion. What he truly needs is someone willing to give him the time and understanding he’s waited so long for.
Simmba has so much love to give — all he’s missing is his forever home. 🐾

Be ready to adopt:
If selected, our rescue counselor will contact you to schedule a phone interview. Please monitor your email and spam folder for our message. Adoptions can happen quickly so be prepared for our call, only apply for dogs that every family member in the home wants, and wait to apply until you return from your vacation.
More on our process:
Due to high demand, especially for popular dogs, not all applicants will be contacted. Moreover, we may not reach out if we have already approved a family to adopt. The process can take several days. Thank you for your patience!
