Story
Reika is a sweet dog. I don’t really want to rehome her, but we live in the country, she is our outdoor dog and she likes to roam. I can kennel her but feel that’s no life for a dog. She needs a home that she can be with her person and give them all kinds of love and cuddles. Even tho she spends the majority of her time outside, she is potty trained as she sleeps in our garage at night and she did stay in the house with us when she was a pup. She can be somewhat protective, barking at certain people but she’s never been aggressive.

Story
Meet Derek! At four and a half months old and just over 20 pounds, this curious pup is ready to discover the world with you. Derek arrived at BENCHS alongside his brother, and now he’s looking for an active home where he can continue to learn, play, and explore. He is incredibly inquisitive and loves engaging with people, always eager to see what you’re up to and be part of it. Toys are a big hit for him, and he’s at that fun stage where everything is an adventure. Derek is currently working on potty training and will need a home that can continue to guide him with consistency and patience as he polishes those skills. He would likely do well either as the only dog or with another social, friendly dog who can help show him the ropes. We are unsure how he would do with cats, though he has shown some interest. If you’re looking for a playful, people-loving puppy to grow alongside, Derek might just be your perfect match.

Story
Max recently arrived at BENCHS after his previous owner made the difficult decision to surrender him when life on the road as a semi truck companion was no longer the right fit for him. Originally adopted from a shelter in West Virginia, Max has clearly spent much of his life closely bonded with his people and prefers companionship over being left alone. He was described as accompanying his owner almost everywhere and is only used to being left alone for very short periods of time. At just 1 year and 3 months old, Max currently weighs 14.2 pounds. He did arrive to us slightly underweight, so we do expect him to continue filling out a bit as he settles into shelter life and eventually a home environment. Max is reported to be mostly house trained and is used to going outside regularly for bathroom breaks throughout the day, however we cannot guarantee his level of potty training in a new home environment. He is not crate trained and may bark, cry, or become destructive if left alone for longer periods, so his future family should be prepared to continue helping him build confidence and independence gradually. In new environments, Max does appear to mark, so his future family should expect some adjustment time and continued consistency with potty routines as he settles in. Despite these challenges, Max has many wonderful qualities that have already made staff fall for him. He absolutely loves people and enjoys affection from men, women, and children alike. One of Max’s favorite things is being held close and spending time near his humans. He also loves squeaky toys and absolutely loves to play with toys. Max has a playful, affectionate side that shines through once he feels comfortable. While he can be nervous around loud noises or thunder, he seeks comfort from the people he trusts. Max has a lot of energy and is looking for an active home that can continue providing him with exercise, enrichment, companionship, and structure. He does not currently appear to be especially food motivated with treats, which is helpful for adopters to know as they continue working on training and confidence building. Max can also be sensitive about his paws, nails, and tail being touched, though no history of biting was reported. He does not ride very well in vehicles and is known to get carsick, so his future family should plan accordingly for travel. His previous owner did report some food-related guarding behaviors involving treats or meals, so his future family should be mindful and respectful around food situations while continuing positive reinforcement and structure. We have not observed these behaviors in the shelter environment, however because of the reported history, Max is required to go to a home without small children. He reportedly runs away from cats because they scare him, and we are currently unsure how he feels about other dogs. Max’s future family should also expect some regular grooming upkeep to help keep his coat healthy and comfortable. He remained sweet, tolerant, and eager for human connection throughout his intake process. Underneath it all is a dog who simply wants to feel safe, loved, and included in someone’s life again. If you are looking for a loyal little companion who wants nothing more than to be close to his people, Max may be waiting for you.
