Story
Meet Derek! At four and a half months old and just over 20 pounds, this curious pup is ready to discover the world with you. Derek arrived at BENCHS alongside his brother, and now he’s looking for an active home where he can continue to learn, play, and explore. He is incredibly inquisitive and loves engaging with people, always eager to see what you’re up to and be part of it. Toys are a big hit for him, and he’s at that fun stage where everything is an adventure. Derek is currently working on potty training and will need a home that can continue to guide him with consistency and patience as he polishes those skills. He would likely do well either as the only dog or with another social, friendly dog who can help show him the ropes. We are unsure how he would do with cats, though he has shown some interest. If you’re looking for a playful, people-loving puppy to grow alongside, Derek might just be your perfect match.

My name is Paya, and I traveled all the way from Alabama to Minnesota with my siblings. We were a bit nervous about starting this new adventure, but I’m slowly finding my way and learning to love my foster home! Every sound and sight in a house is new to me, and while it takes me a little time to warm up to people, I absolutely adore my fellow dog pals. Having a dog sibling is a must for me, as it helps me learn how to play, go for walks, and even manage potty time. Speaking of potty, I’m a good girl who knows to do my business outside! I’m also very food- and treat-motivated, which means I learn quickly when tasty goodies are involved. In fact, I’ve mastered going through the doggie door for just one treat—that’s my ticket to freedom! Now, I love bringing all my toys outside for some extra fun! I also enjoy a good walk or hike to sniff out the world around me. Did I mention I love the lakes and pools? I prefer older children at home since younger, fast-moving ones make me a bit nervous. If you’re looking for a sweet pup to join your family, I’m ready to be your loyal companion. Let’s embark on this adventure together! From the foster family:  Paya is a sweet and shy girl who takes her time to adjust to new surroundings and people. However, once she forms a bond, she becomes your devoted shadow, always wanting to be by your side. Paya is extremely intelligent and a quick learner, thriving with positive reinforcement and treats.  She is just starting to explore the world of toys and loves carrying them around, discovering new ways to have fun. Paya walks beautifully on a leash and is currently discovering her love for hiking. After a good adventure, she enjoys a refreshing dip in the lake to cool off. She is also very good with the other resident dogs in the home and loves to mimic their activities. Her favorite thing is receiving a good belly rub, and she will plop down in front of you just to sneak in a quick one. Paya is looking for a loving home that will give her the time and patience she needs to blossom. She promises to fill your life with joy and companionship!  July 21, 2026, 5:24 pm

Name: Rodney Age: Puppy DOB 4/18/26 Gender: Male Breed: Hound /Lab mix Weight: 11 lbs Dog Friendly: Yes Cat Friendly: Yes  Child Friendly: Yes House Trained: In progress, puppy Crate Trained: In progress, puppy Energy Level: Puppy Temperament: Gentle, Loving, Attentive, Calm, Gentle Requirements: Not rental appropriate, can transfer to adoptive home mid August  Adoption Fee: $550 + tax To adopt, go to:  www.mendingspirits.org/apply-to-adopt.html From the Foster Family:  Rodney is as sweet as they come. With his calm, gentle personality and soulful, mesmerizing eyes, Rodney has a way of making everyone he meets fall in love. After a little playtime, Rodney is perfectly happy to curl up for a nap or cuddle beside his favorite people. He enjoys a good game of tug-of-war, chewing on a bone, and simply being wherever his family is. He's especially fond of his foster human siblings (ages 10, 8, and 5) and happily follows them from room to room, always wanting to be part of the fun. Rodney is doing great with potty training and much prefers going outside. In fact, his favorite place in the world is stretched out in the grass, soaking up the fresh air. He's learning to come when called and naturally stays close, checking back in often instead of wandering far. This handsome boy is also respectful of the resident cat. While he's curious about her, he's gentle, gives her space, and doesn't get overly excited around her. Rodney's affectionate nature shines through in everything he does. Whether he's resting at your feet, leaning in for cuddles, or quietly keeping you company, he simply loves being close to his people. His easygoing temperament, gentle heart, and loving personality would make him a wonderful addition to just about any family. If you're looking for a loyal best friend who loves cuddles as much as adventures, Rodney is ready to steal your heart. About Me: I made the long trip from Alabama with my nine brothers and sisters. Life has been a little different since we all went our separate ways, but I’m settling in more every day.  get along with every dog I meet! I love playing with my foster family's resident dog, although sometimes he forgets I’m still just a little puppy. When that happens, I have to remind him to take it easy! I love to play, but I also really love to relax. My foster family says I’m an old soul because I’m happiest just being included in whatever everyone else is doing. If you're outside, I want to be outside. If you're relaxing, I'll be right there with you. Speaking of outside... laying in the grass is my absolute favorite thing. Sometimes I’ll even sit by the door just hoping someone will let me out, even if I don't have to go potty. I just love feeling the grass beneath my paws and watching the world go by. I'm still getting used to my kennel. I spent my whole life sharing space with my siblings, so sleeping alone is a big adjustment. I'm learning that having my own cozy spot is okay, but if I had to choose, I'd much rather be hanging out with my people than by myself. I've started learning how to walk on a leash. It's a little strange if you ask me, but I'm figuring it out! I like to stay close, but I also have to stop and sniff everything along the way. I guess that's the hound in me! If you're looking for a gentle, loving puppy who wants to be your sidekick through everyday life and every adventure, I think we'd make the perfect team. I can't wait to find my forever family, snuggle up beside you, explore the world together, and love you with my whole heart. July 21, 2026, 5:24 pm
