Story
10/06/26 15:13Gnocchi has been placed on FINAL as of 10/6/2026.He must be pulled by 5:00 PM on 10/13/2026, or he will be humanely euthanized.Gnocchi has demonstrated significant stress and arousal while housed in the shelter. When staff attempt to remove Gnocchi from his kennel, he bites at the leash during the leashing process and continues to do so afterward. There have been several instances where Gnocchi has bitten at the leash in close proximity to staff members’ hands. This behavior presents a safety concern for staff handling him and should be taken into consideration when determining appropriate handling procedures. While housed in his kennel, Gnocchi has been observed body slamming against the kennel door and pacing the length of the kennel. These behaviors are consistent with a high level of arousal or stress in the shelter environment and should be taken into consideration when developing an appropriate handling and management plan.Gnocchi was also introduced to another dog for a dog-to-dog (D2D) interaction. During play, Gnocchi was very forward and vocal but did not attempt to bite the helper dog. His ability to redirect his attention toward his handler and his lack of biting toward the other dog are important observations; however, his rapid approach and vocal behavior indicate that future dog-to-dog interactions should be carefully managed and closely supervised.Any future medical care, handling, leash work, and veterinary procedures should be carefully planned around Gnocchi`s stress and arousal level and conducted by experienced personnel. Given his documented leash biting, high arousal during kennel transitions, and repetitive kennel behaviors, placement should be with an experienced rescue organization that can provide a lower-stress environment, appropriate decompression time, individualized behavioral support, and appropriate safety and management protocols.Gnocchi is available for rescue or adoption with a waiver.A rescue partner must commit to and pull Gnocchi by 5:00 PM on 10/13/2026, or he will be humanely euthanized.EXTENSION REQUEST PROCESSA Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal`s Needs Rescue Final Date no later than 5:00 PM on the noted final date by emailing SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov, with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor.10/05/26 07:02What I did today:I’m a great road trip buddy and sat politely in the back seat, watching the world go by, on our drive to the trail. Out on the trail I set a brisk pace and made sure my walker kept up – we passed people, bikes, and cars without a second glance, and I capped off the walk with a very satisfying cool-down splash in the creek. I finished the outing the right way: soaking up all the pets and butt scratches I could get, because a big guy like me deserves big love. What to know about this dog· A strong boy who likes a fast pace and can pull – would be best with a strong handler who can keep up with him· Good at passing people, bikes, and cars – gets excited when he sees other dogs and will pull toward them· Treat-motivated and knows “sit”· Affectionate and loves pets and butt scratches· Would thrive in an active home with a strong handler who can match his energy and give him the adventure-filled life he deservesThree words to describe me: Affectionate, Playful, Cheerful08/19/26 15:27Gnocchi has been placed on needs rescue URGENT for his consistent high FAS (fear, anxiety, stress) score since begin here at the shelter.Gnocchi is a handsome 7 year old mastiff that has been in the shelter since June. When he first got here, his behavior was very inconsistent. Some days he would be loose and happy to greet people at the front of his kennel and other times he was barring teeth. Now that Gnocchi has had time to decompress, he is not showing any signs of aggression towards people or other dogs. In the kennel now, he is constantly barking and jumping. Gnocchi knows that the kennel life is not for him and he tells us that every time he returns from his walks. He is always super happy to leave the kennel for his daily walk, but he is known to stall when it is time to return. And who can blame him. He wants a life outside of the kennel with someone who will give him all the love he deserves. Will you be the one to help this sweet boy and give him a home away from the shelter?
