Story
Meet Azreal, the female mastiff-mix puppy! We are not sure of Azreal’s exact breed mix or background but she is fairly large for her age (already almost 20lbs at 10 weeks old). Azreal has been soft and appeasing with strangers. She seems to have some history around dog-savvy felines. Adopters with any resident dogs should plan a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Azreal is still perfecting all things puppy like house training, age appropriate socialization, etc. Her next family should ensure they have enough patience, time and resources to bond with her through positive reinforcement based training and help her to grow into a good canine citizen as she ages. Azreal is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them

Story
Gus is a 4.5 year old mastiff/rotweiler mix. He a wonderful companion animal and has given our family loyalty, cuddles, and goofiness. He is a low-energy dog who loves to snooze, but also enjoys moderate walks and hikes. Gus needs a new home because he can aggressively resource guard random objects (e.g. a child's toy or a kleenex). We cannot keep him in our house with three very small children who may be inclined to follow him if he takes a forbidden toy. Gus would be great in an adult-only home or a family with older children who can understand and manage this behavior. Gus is great with kids, adults, and other dogs. He is trained on the basics and walks well on a leash. He is neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. It is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to find a new home for this loving dog. But he will be a fantastic addition to any home without small children who wants a loving companion and can manage his occasional resource guarding.

06/21/26 12:05Looking for a sweet boy to call your own? Meet Red!Red is a shy 1 year old that has been at the shelter since May. This gentle dog is known to startle easily and can be wary of new people and objects, but he warms up when given the chance. He is treat motivated and allows full handling. He loves to go on walks and has shown no reactivity towards other dogs at this time. Red is a bit undersocialized and could use some leash training because he has been noted once to be a bit of a tripping hazard. But with more consistent walks with his forever family, Red will be a walking pro.Come in today to meet Red. He is waiting patiently for someone who will take him home.

Story
Meet Dozer – Your Oversized Lap Dog! If you're looking for a gentle giant with a goofy personality, Dozer is your guy. This handsome Mastiff weighs in at around 100 pounds, but he's convinced he's the perfect size to curl up in your lap—and honestly, who are we to tell him otherwise? Dozer is deaf, but don't let that fool you. He's incredibly people-oriented, eager to connect, and quickly learns through hand signals, patience, and plenty of treats. In fact, he's highly treat motivated, making training both fun and rewarding. He's a lovable goofball who doesn't always know what to do with all those long legs, which only adds to his charm. While he can be a little awkward at times, he's not anxious—just a big, silly boy figuring life out one step at a time. Dozer enjoys the company of other dogs, adores people, and has a sweet, gentle nature that makes everyone fall in love with him. He's already neutered and ready to find a family that will appreciate his unique personality and endless affection. If you've been dreaming of a loyal best friend with a heart as big as his paws, Dozer is waiting to meet you. ##2498995##

Story
Romeo is very sweet 6 year old boy but the vets think he may be younger. He would love to be a family dog and definitely wants to find his forever home, but can be protective of his people and his space. That being said once he knows you are part of the family he listens very well and knows many commands, sit, stay, down, shake, wait. He is slow to warm up to new people but once he has been introduced to you he is a gentle giant and big couch potato that loves to cuddle. He also really enjoys going for a ride in the car. It is not recommended to have young kids due to his size. He is good on the leash and knows many commands but needs someone that is not afraid of his size and can properly handle him. Experienced adopter with larger breeds is a must. No other dogs or animals in the household and not a good candidate for crates.
