Story
Bentley is being fostered in Illinois. Bentley has some vision.Bentley, a reserved, easy-going gentleman is looking for a calm, relaxed housemate/best friend. He was recently interviewed about his special search. What would your perfect “digs” include?-I am very shy, so it would have an area to sleep and dine privately with some storage for my soft, plushy toy stash. In addition I would need a second cozy dog bed for relaxing and just “being” closer to my human(s) in the common area.-Ideally it must also include green space. I love to be outdoors! The words “outside” or “walk” just start my tail a-wagging uncontrollably. (See video) A leisurely jaunt at a medium waddle with an occasional relaxed trot or a super fun “Sniffari” is enjoyed several times a day!Would you share the qualities you need in a housemate/best friend?- My person will need to be patient, intuitive and willing to take the time for trust building. (As an introvert, I can be a puzzle and full of contradictions). Here are a few examples....I require a large perimeter of personal space, but offer the same to my person. I am low-maintenance, well-mannered and not an in-your-face attention-seeker, yet I also feel safe and the most comfortable knowing my human is nearby. This makes me an ideal housemate for a retiree or a remote worker.A cuddle bug I am not, yet I have been known to fall asleep in a lap occasionally and I find head scratches or butt and back rubs absolutely irresistible.Meeting humans is difficult for me, yet I approach well-mannered dogs happily. What do you consider your finest quality?-I am agreeable. Dress me up in a silly sweater, wipe my dirty toes when I come in the house, give me a bath, take a car ride.....as long as I am with you, I’m all in.And your weakest?-I am working on conquering my insecurities. I get anxious when I am home alone for a long stretch, so I sometimes have potty accidents.Bentley, what else would you like to tell folks?-I sleep through the night and during the day it is my mission to provide quiet company, put a smile on your face and love in your heart.BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Marty is being fostered in PA. 1-17-2026 Update for Marty Marty is doing really well in his foster home and is still a spunky little man with a bit of arthritis in his backend but it doesn't slow him down. Marty's hearing continues to be pretty good for his age and he is right in the mix of his foster siblings when Mom comes home after being out for any time. Marty's hair has grown in nicely on his back. He was almost bald when he came to his foster home. Marty's foster mom had never seen a change in a foster's personality quite as drastic as she did following Marty's dental, when all of his teeth had to be removed. Some teeth were so badly decayed that they had begun to calcify and attach to his jaw bones. After a few days of recovery, he began to eat and to be interested in the world. Marty eats soaked kibble with some soft food mixed in and eats every bite of each meal. He is now on 4 medications for his congestive heart failure and is doing very well with just an occasional cough. Fun facts about Marty: -He LOVES burrowing into beds that have a flap for him to crawl under -He is not safe when on furniture because he will quickly decide he wants off and give no warning and has no fear. -Marty never barks -Marty is smaller than the two cats in his foster home and really doesn't care. :) Little Marty is a sweet, easy-going little mini poodle guy who gets along with dogs and cats and people of all ages. His breed is guessed at as a full blooded mini poodle. His estimated age is about 13 but he's a very quick-stepping little man and enjoys exploring his environment, especially outside. He can find his way to the door and he was doing a great job at pottying outside until his foster mom went back to work a couple weeks ago. He will be very easy to get back in the habit of eliminating outside with a forever family who is home more. He's fairly easy to figure out in that, if he's up and exploring, he needs to go out. :) Marty has a very thin coat of fur on his torso but he does not have any visible skin issues and does not itch. His thyroid levels were checked and were fine. We know little about his past life so he may be recuperating from a past issue. Marty is leash trained and does well but because he's a small and older guy, walks won't be very fast. He also rides well in the car. At this time, he seems to enjoy dog bed hopping over being on a lap and he will walk right off the edge of a chair or bed. He needs to be carried up and down stairs and has no awareness of being at the top of stairs. He will remind his foster mom if his breakfast or dinner is overly late. Marty has had a slight cough since arriving in his foster home and following an xray on September 16th, it was discovered that his heart is slightly enlarged and he has a small amount of fluid in the upper portion of his one lung. These are both signs of congestive heart failure, which is fairly common in little old men like Marty. He will probably need to take Benazepril, Lasix and Pimobendan for the rest of his life. These medications run about 50.00 per month. Marty will have a dental on September 26th. He will probably need to have most, if not all, of his teeth extracted but it will be so much better for him to have a healthy mouth again! Marty will make a sweet little companion for some family. He's very excited to be spoiled and doted on for the rest of his days. BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Gusto recently came to us from Peoria Animal Control, where he was found as a stray. He's spunky and playful, with the friendliest attitude towards everyone he meets. Gusto has a bit of a goofy haircut at the moment due to some pretty extensive matting when he was found, but he is going to be stunning when his coat grows back in. We're still getting to know Gusto, and will update his bio as we learn more! Gusto is currently available for foster-to-adopt to a family within 30min of our shelter while we complete his medical. All of our dogs are dewormed, spayed/neutered, microchipped, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, and heartworm tested if they are old enough. Story
Meet Brook 💕 Brook is a gentle soul who is learning what it means to be loved. After spending her early life in a puppy mill, everything in the world is still very new to her. While she can be shy and unsure at first, once she feels safe, Brook’s sweet personality shines through. She absolutely loves curling up in laps, soaking up attention, and being pampered with grooming sessions. She also rides wonderfully in the car and enjoys quiet companionship with her people. Brook is still adjusting to life in a home and will need a patient adopter who understands that progress takes time. She is fearful of doorways and leashes, and she is still working on potty training. She does well when kept on a regular schedule and thrives with gentle encouragement rather than pressure. She can also be a bit of a picky eater and isn’t very treat motivated. Brook can be selective with other dogs and may need slow, proper introductions to feel comfortable. She has shown some guarding and herding behaviors around certain dogs, especially high-energy personalities, so any canine companions should be a good match for her temperament. A calm, patient home that can help her continue building confidence will set her up for success. Brook is looking for a loving family who will give her the time and understanding she deserves as she learns how wonderful life outside the puppy mill can truly be. In return, she will reward you with endless love, quiet companionship, and the sweetest cuddles. 🐾 All of our dogs are dewormed, spayed/neutered, microchipped, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, and heartworm tested if they are old enough.
