He is cheerful, curious, confident, playful, and always ready to investigate whatever—or whoever—might make his day more interesting. A Happy Little Sidekick Blurb starts his morning around 7:00 with a trip to the backyard, followed by breakfast around 8:00. Then it is time for several hours of playing with his foster siblings, entertaining himself with toys, and checking in on his people as they work. He enjoys following his foster family from room to room, but he isn’t demanding about it. Blurb simply likes to know what everyone is doing so he can decide whether it is worth joining. If the activity doesn’t meet his standards, he is perfectly capable of finding his own entertainment. Blurb approaches each day like a tiny Energizer Bunny: he goes and goes until his battery suddenly runs out, and then he crashes for a serious puppy nap. His afternoons bring another round of playing, exploring, potty breaks, and napping. He eats dinner around 4:00 or 5:00, enjoys evening playtime, and is usually ready for some couch cuddles around 8:30. After one final backyard trip around 11:00, he sleeps peacefully in his kennel through the night. Explorer, Gardener and Snack Enthusiast Blurb absolutely loves spending time in the backyard, where he considers himself an intrepid explorer—and apparently an accomplished gardener. One day, his foster family looked up to find him happily munching on a cucumber he had harvested himself. The garden was fenced, but Blurb was not discouraged. He simply tugged on the vine until a ripe cucumber came within snout range and helped himself to a fresh snack. That curiosity extends beyond vegetables. If something interesting is lying on the ground, Blurb will probably try to put it in his mouth. His adopters will need to keep tempting objects out of reach and continue redirecting him toward appropriate puppy toys and chews. Small Dog, Brave Heart Blurb was a happy little dude from his very first day in foster care. He was initially somewhat intimidated by the resident dogs—a 25-pound terrier and a 45-pound husky—but quickly decided that his best strategy was to win them over with enthusiasm. He now loves racing and playing chase with both of his larger foster sisters. Even though they are older and occasionally grouchy, they enjoy joining in his games. Blurb would likely love having a compatible, playful dog in his new home, especially one who appreciates his puppy energy. He could also be happy as the center of attention with people who will give him plenty of playtime and enrichment. Blurb is impressively brave for such a tiny guy. During one supervised visit to the pool area, he spotted something in the water and confidently leapt in after it. The splash surprised him for a moment, but he quickly resurfaced wearing what his foster describes as a delighted little “Yippee!” expression. Affectionate Without Being Demanding Blurb enjoys being included in family life, but he does not need to be touching someone every moment of the day. He is independent enough to play by himself and settle away from his people when nothing exciting is happening. In the evening, however, he is happy to slow down and cuddle on the couch while everyone watches television. When his foster family returns home, Blurb greets them with an enormous smile, enthusiastic full-body wiggles, and a wag that seems much too big for his tiny frame. He also does well when left home with the resident dogs and has shown no signs of separation anxiety. Puppy Skills in Progress Blurb is still working on housetraining. Frequent trips outside, close supervision, and a consistent schedule will help him continue making progress. The good news is that Blurb understands the concept. He knows how to use the dog door in the screen and will sometimes go to the door, bark, or ring the potty bells when he needs to go outside. Like many puppies his age, Blurb spends much of his waking time chewing. He was initially quite mouthy with hands and pant legs, but he has already improved significantly through gentle redirection to appropriate toys. He has not been observed chewing furniture. He may occasionally dig at a floor mat or in the yard while trying to retrieve something interesting to chew. Blurb is generally not a big barker. He may give a couple of barks if startled or when he notices a reflection in the windows at night, but he responds well to a gentle reminder to quiet down. Because his foster has been recovering from a knee injury, Blurb has not yet had the opportunity to practice walking on leash. His new family should be prepared to introduce leash skills with patience, encouragement, and plenty of treats. Coat and Grooming Blurb has a soft, low-shedding coat. He does shed a little, but because he is so small, it is barely noticeable. As a Papillon mix, he will benefit from regular brushing to keep his coat neat and comfortable. Blurb’s Ideal Home Blurb would thrive with gentle, engaged people who will embrace him as part of the family and continue helping him learn. Another playful dog could be a wonderful companion, although the most important things are plenty of interaction, appropriate outlets for his puppy energy, and a commitment to finishing his housetraining and basic manners. He may require a little puppy work, but the return on that investment will be enormous. Blurb brings joy into every room he enters. He is adventurous, affectionate, delightfully silly, and so genuinely happy that it is nearly impossible not to feel happier when he is around. Blurb’s story is only beginning.
