Okay, we’re just going to say it… Poppy might be PERFECT. â¤ï¸ We know “perfect” is a big word, but anyone who knows Poppy will tell you that she is one incredibly special girl.Poppy has been at the shelter for almost a year, and somehow, this wonderful dog is still waiting for her forever home. She is a staff favorite, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. Poppy is the kind of dog who makes everyone around her smile.She absolutely loves going for walks and would make an amazing hiking buddy for someone who enjoys getting out and exploring. When she’s not out enjoying an adventure, Poppy is perfectly content soaking up the sunshine, getting belly rubs, or hanging out in the office with her favorite people. She even seems to be perfectly comfortable around the office kitties!Poppy is also best friends with King and Bandit, two other long-term residents who have become her buddies. While she loves her special friends, Poppy can be selective with certain dogs, so a meet and greet with any dog is required to make sure everyone is a good match.And if you’re wondering how she might do in a home, Poppy gives us another reason to be optimistic: she never has accidents in her room. We feel confident that with the right transition and routine, she will do wonderfully in a home.Poppy has spent far too long waiting. Not yet spayed/neutered due to age.Age/Size: Turned 5 months on 8/3; approx. 35–40 lbs currentlyHealth: No known issues except Pocahontas. All will need spay/neuter and updated shots.Training: Not housebroken or leash-trained. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Little Swirl lived her whole first year wild on a construction site. She was born to a mama dog that took up residence and interacted with the workers from a young age, but was never leashed or contained or travelled. So she had limited experiences. She found her way to us after management insisted the dogs find homes and be removed from the construction site. It took a couple weeks to catch Little Swirl but we did and surprisingly she settled into a home relatively quickly. She does not like to be acknowledged. She will lay near you and come to you for food/treats, but she generally prefers if you pretend she isn't there. If you acknowledge her then she will leave and lay somewhere further away for a while. This doesn't mean she doesn't enjoy pets and attention on occasion, but she will let you know if she is seeking this small amount of affection by smelling your hand or booping you. Even though she is requesting attention, she still wishes for it to be minimal and it is simply a gift on her part that you should be ever thankful for. She LOVES other dogs and will settle in quickly with them, she loves to play and can play a bit rough but she is learning when she is being too much and dialing it back. She scares easy, so she is quick to squeal over the smallest things, but thank goodness this only happens about once a day. She has done well with cats overall in her foster home and there are no real complaints, but the cats do startle her at times and she will yelp even if they dont touch her. Due to her nervous behavior, she is never going to be a dog who travels well or enjoys walking but we will start trying to work with her and show her it can be a good thing. She also needs to be in a home with no children OR children over 10 years old who understand that she is a dog that prefers her space and will nip if cornered or restrained.She is a really sweet girl and her looks can melt your heart if you dont mind a cuddly dog that doesn't like being touched unless on her terms.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.September 26, 2026, 7:01 pm

Judy has already beaten the odds once. In May 2025, Judy was brought to an animal shelter after being shot in her neighborhood. No owner ever came forward to claim her. Thanks to the care she received, Judy made a full recovery and has shown incredible resilience every step of the way. It would be heartbreaking for Judy's journey to end on June 26 after surviving what she did. Help us get her out of the shelter and save her life!! Judy has proven she is a survivor. Now she needs someone willing to give her the future she fought so hard to have. ❤️‍🩹 Medical: Heartworm Negative, Bordetella, DHPP, Rabies 📅 Deadline: June 26 (to spring her from the shelter...she is not in the rescue yet) After everything Judy has survived, she deserves a happy ending—not a deadline. She is an active girl, and will be happiest with a fenced yard for running time—or a devoted athletic family to get her through her bursts of energy. Mountain curs are not a breed we see frequently here in Virginia; Sophia has been a “transplant” for over a year, and has made the change from her roots in New Mexico to Virginia with ease. She is familiar with kids, as her foster home has grandchildren who visit frequently, and she knows about cats. She is housetrained and knows about crates. What else can we tell you?
